View Full Version : Salt Group Buy?

mothra

Is anyone interested in doing a group buy for salt? I have been talking to Discount Pet about it and they are willing to help us put it together. We'd probably be talking about a pallet of either Oceanic or IO (200g buckets), maybe they would do a half pallet of each.

I don't have a price yet, obviously that will depend on how many buckets we are looking to purchase. It sounds like we should be able to get it for a better deal than our usual discount (on the Oceanic).

If anyone is interested I'm willing to organize it just let me know how many buckets you want. I will update the thread if/when we know that there is enough interest to move forward.

Thanks,

Jake,

Bucket or 2 of Oceanic might be nice. LMK when you get pricing and want exact count.

For those wondering about price, well it will depend on how many we can buy :) It should be safe to say that the price needs to be signifigantly lower than our usual discount to make it worth it to us. Usually we're looking at $10 for 50g so that would be $40 for 200g AT OUR USUAL DISCOUNT.

So you can probably assume it will be $35 or less for us to go for it. I believe Carter's already sells 200g of IO at that price (does anyone know?) so really we should be getting a better deal.

Including myself the totals so far (using the larger number of what you specified):

IO = 4

OC = 9

lanxang

IO at carters goes for 34.99 for 160gal.

mothra
09/20/2005, 09:47 AM
Ok, so we should potentially be around that price or under otherwise it's not saving us a whole lotta cash.

Twins is 33.00 out the door cash money for 160 gal.

Dan / All

As noted a few posts above the price will depend on how many we order, we are shooting for a low to mid $30 price per 200g bucket. If you think you would be interested at this price range please let me know which brand and how many buckets

I'm interested in 1-2buckets of IO depending upon price... Mna I need to get out of here so I can finish plumbing the clam tank

Instant Ocean: 6

Anyone else interested?

Thanks for organizing.

I'll swing by DP this weekend and see if they have a number of buckets per pallet yet, and what kind of pricing they can do for us.

The count is somewhere around

15 and 9 for Oceanic an IO respectively.

rulesmith

I would do 2 oceanic.

Here is the dealio folks:

A) We can buy at least half a pallet of Oceanic @ $32.99 each
B) We can buy close to a full pallet of IO @36.99 each

There are (40) 200g buckets to a pallet according to Discount Pet. I didn't want to get into it with them but I can't see there being more than (36) buckets per pallet (a standard pallet is 48x40" and a bucket is about 12" diameter you do the math)... and I have seen at least one reference on RC that there are 24 buckets per pallet. What this means... I don't know yet. If anyone feels like researching it and posting your findings let me know.

The plus side of dealing with DP is they will hold the pallet at the store and we can just go get our salt whenever.

Another option is to take this to an online vendor and see what they can do for us, if it's only a savings of a buck or two I'd say just stick with our local sponsor, but I don't like the idea of getting a suspicious number of buckets per pallet from them.

Thoughts? Opinions? Drinks anyone?

GorillaReefer
10/03/2005, 10:42 PM
Drinks for sure. I'm buying. I need salt, so i don't care about price, so I'm down for whatever.

mothra
10/03/2005, 10:47 PM
Hey alright! You better watch it cause the BOD likes to drink... and so does everyone else in the club apparently!

To clarify my previous post:

Discount Pet REQUIRES us to buy either 20+ buckets of Oceanic or close to 40 buckets of IO to get the deal. We should be able to do the Oceanic for sure, we just need to get everyone comitted.

Jake, since it looks like the price is about 32. Put me down for 4 instead of 2 oceanic bucket.

I'd say we go online and see what we can do.. I picked up three buckets of Oceanic a while back from a BAR guy for $27/each...

mothra
10/05/2005, 11:36 PM
Wow, thats a good price. Who did you get them from?

Maybe he can tell us where he got them. I'd really prefer to support a sponsor but $5 less per bucket adds up to more than just a few dollars.

mothra

I talked with DP again today, they mentioned that Oceanic will have some pricing specials going on around the end of November that should get us an even better deal. So lets wait it out a little and see how it looks.

Bump for a great GB (although it is only the beginning of Nov... couple more weeks before those pricing speacials are supposed to kick in :))

Oh, and when this GB picks back up please put me down for 2 buckets of Oceanic :)

rulesmith

I will take 10. Might as well buy them for my big tank, figure it will need salt by Febuary, so while the price is good :) I will pay in advance, no proplem.

This should be ok as it is a club event, not an individual advertisement. I'll try to talk to DP this week/weekend to see what the deal is. We should be looking good, I just need to determine how they want us to make payment, and take delivery.

mothra

Update:

I talked to Danny at DP yesterday and he is going to give us the price on tuesday for Oceanic in quantity, he did say that they (Oceanic) didn't do the promo as planned, so the price may not change. I also asked that they tell us how they want to receive payment and handle pick up of the salt.

For folks using IO we should note that we will not be doing a group buy, there was not enough interest. It will be on sale in December though (fyi).

One thing to note is that both Tish (Store Manager) and Danny (Fish Room Manager) are leaving in the next month. I don't know how this will affect our current situation with them as our sponsor and/or this group buy...

Not yet, but he's still talking about it. He's going to be getting the new fish room in the Lodi store going.

mothra

Stockton. I don't know if all the Discount Pet / Pet Extreme's will have it on sale, I think it will be 50% off (?).

Danny runs the fish room there. He has been talking of opening a store for a while now.

I did some more calculating will probably want to buy 12 not 10. Let me know how and when and where ::

mothra

Here is what I have so far for Oceanic 200g buckets:

RuleSmith: 12
Jesus: 4
Jason: 4
Mothra: 1
Plankton: 2
Gorilla: 2
Tenderoni: 1
SparkSS: 2

Everyone please confirm to me via PM.

Currently we're waiting on DP to tell us the final price ($32 estimated) and how to make payment and pick up our respective orders. There is still time to get in until we announce the order is closed - or until we hit 40 buckets whichever comes first.

mothra
11/23/2005, 03:07 PM
Well this is looking like it's not going to happen :(

1) Only 2 people have responded to verify their order, and one other to say they were no longer interested.

2) Discount Pet didn't really understand what we're trying to do I guess and they are saying that the price will be $39.99 *any time*. Meaning they are giving us a club discount on a regular basis. That price is not bad, but they didn't understand that we're trying to buy a full pallet (or close to one) all at once.

Danny is going to talk with the rep again and see what they can work out. Honestly I don't know whats going on because we had this all hashed out last month (the price was $32.99). I'm about ready to call it quits, if someone else wants to pick up where I left off feel free...

Well I am kinda of glad it fell through. I was just looking at the bucket I have here and noticed it was for 200 gals. For some reason I got confused and thought it was 50gal. So I was going to buy way too much. I would have had to store it for a few years lol. New system will be 500gal total water volume, so would have needed maybe 4 buckets. So you saved me getting yelled at for having more things around the house :)

mothra
12/04/2005, 06:00 PM
LOL. Well good thing then! Actually I'm dissapointed with the way this went. First it was "no problem $34.99 each" then it was "wait for a month and we'll have better pricing" and ended up being "oh we didn't know you wanted to buy a pallet". I have a feeling that they just didn't want to bother with it. Maybe we'll try again in a few months with someone else.
