I was in my local asian food market today and found a 2-3 pound bag of frozen fish roe. The roe appeared to be very small, approximately less than 1 mm in diameter. I'm wondering if this would be a substitute for prawn roe?
The market told me that they would be getting smaller bags in on Friday. I'll go and check it out then. Any help would be appreciated. This may be an easy way to find roe if they will work.

I can't remember the brand name or the fish from which the roe comes from. It is a nice orange color, at least it would be great for sushi.

There's a good chance it's okay for fish UNLESS they add stuff to it.

I believe if it is small and orange it is flying fish roe. I have not bred cards but I believe the roe to be good food for any fish.

That sounds like Tobiko, which CAL3V correctly identified as flying fish roe. Oh, the horror of feeding that to anything but yourself! Now I'm going to have to get sushi tomorrow, thanks.

BTW , luckily the asian supermarkets around here sell fresh roe.

Well, I looked on the ingredients list and it has rice wine vinegar, MSG, and a few others. I'm guessing that you DO NOT want to feed this to fish. Am I correct?
I looked for other fish roe without any added ingredients and they did not have any.

Yup, do not feed if it has all those things in it. Too bad you don't get fresh roe over there.

Definitely a no-no. I believe MSG in large quantities doesn't do people good, and considering how much smaller those baby banggais are...

So, where can I get some in the Midwest that does not have all the extra ingredients?
