How many gallons should be turned over in your tank per hour per gallon?

Say you have a 50 gallon tank. If you need to turn water over 4 times per hour then it would follow you need a 200 gph pump

Is this accurate? Or at least what is the goal per gallon?

Thanks,

I thought I heard you want to aim around 10 gallons per hour but that totally depends on what you want to keep? i'm not sure but that what i heard.

I think having a moderate amount of turnover should be fine. I would say 2 to 3 times would be fine. As long as you have plenty of motion in the tank, everything will be groovy. Only a certian amount of water is going to hit you protien skimmer. Water going to your fuge will be at a much lesser amount. So if you don't have that monster amount of water turnover. it is all ok in our reef world!!!

In our 55 gallon tank, we have a Mag 7 (700 GPH) in the sump running all out, a Maxi 1200 in the tank blowing the other direction, and the skimmer sturring things up too. I would have to think that maybe the 10 gph was 10X turn over.

The head on the Mag is about 4 ft, and the outputs are not pointed directly on anything.

About 1200 gph in a 165 Gallon tank....

So, I guess 7x per hour.

I have a 75gal tank with 700gph = 9 times

I wouls have to say it depends on what you are looking to keep. Jelly fish or SPS's?

I keep alot of SPS's so I have alot of turn over and have 2 PH in the tank to some turbulent water flow. But in my 30 gal refugium I have .25 an hour turn over and a air lift tube for surface agitation.

Thanks for the feeback. At this time I am only concerned with the main tank.

But what do you want to keep in the main tank? That should determine your turn over.

SPS 7 to 10 IMO
LPS 6 to 8 IMO
Sofies 4-7 IMO
