View Full Version : Making a LFS List

I am trying to put together a list of LFS for Ohio and S/E Michigan. I think I have about all of the major ones for Ohio (is there anything in the Defiance area?) but I need help with the ones in MI. All I have for up there is Tropicorium. If you know of any please post their address, Ph# and Hrs or a link to their site. Anywhere up through Pontiac over to Lansing would be fine. I guess while I am at it how about some over in N/E Indiana?
Please don't list any rinky dink shops that would be a waste of time to visit.

I would include Tropical Reef in Holland, OH now that the new management has made the place nice again. Also, Ocean Treasures, I don't get up there much anymore, but they always had a nice selection.

LOL I was in there a couple weeks ago and the place was a joke. Nice people and nice display tank but his prices were completely nuts. Yes I forgot to add Ocean Treasures to the list. It can be a nice little store at times.

Anyone been to L&S auatics in Sandusky lately? I havent been in the shop since the end of last year but I have dealt with them a lot in the past with cichlids and on my last visit Larry had a nice coral tank and a pretty good selection of saltwater fish. He was working on an addition at the time for more room for sw...

His drygood prices are pretty high, but he always has very nice well cared for livestock. I've been meaning to make a trip back over that way, but salty critter is closer, and always has what I need at better prices. Not to mention the service can't be beat anywhere...

Well I did up until you had to go and remind me :) They really do not need to be on my list.
I would like to find some more info on this L&S aquatics in Sandusky (address, Ph#, hrs).

Sandusky, OH 44870

Not sure on his hours anymore Like I said I haven't been in the area for awhile now. It's not a very big shop at all and the owner is the only person I have ever seen working in the store. I do know him well enough to say that what he does have has been taken care of (atleast while in his shop) to the best of his ability. He takes a lot of pride in the care/health of his tanks...

There is a small store in Wauseon, OH. With a decent selection of Salt Water Fish. I don't know the name but you people closer to it may be able to look it up. I travel through there all the time and sometimes I stop in to kill some time.

I went to L&S today and I hate to say it ,but it isn't worth driving much out of your way for. His coral selection and high prices on them was almost laughable. He had probably 30 or so different SW fish at prices that seemed to me (Ive never bought any SW fish) to be reasonable. Everything did look very healthy as always. He is into cichlids and always has a nice selection of them to choose from.

Bottom line is if you have to go much out of you way to stop in then just save your gas money to buy something nice at saltycritter...

The Coral Reef on Sylvania has some nice fish, some corals (no SPS). Owner is really friendly...just be sure to research, the kids (I say kids but they're in their 30's) have given me incorrect info a few times on care.

weimers75,
Welcome to NORA and
<img src="/images/welcome.gif" width="500" height="62"><br><b><i><big><big>To Reef Central</b></i></big></big>

I still shop there. It seems like they have been going out of their way to give me good deals. I mainly deal with Lynn, the older gentleman that works there. He has understands very well how to speak to customers and always has. He always gives me great deals and sometimes gives me freebies. My last trip he gave me a nice ricordia polyp. It seems like when I first started in the hobby almost 3 years ago, they were heavy on the misinformation, but over the years, they seem to have become more informative. Lynn is the first to tell me about incompatable fish purchases.

Definitley agree with you on the research, though. I always make sure I have a good working knowlege of any corals I buy from anyone.

Are you in the Toledo area?

weimers75
08/30/2005, 06:16 PM
Yes, I'm in Toledo...I live less than 5 minutes from the Coral Reef, so I stop in quite frequently. I didn't know I could get freebies though...I guess you have to know how to ask. I have to agree about Lynn. I once bought a crab and he said he wasn't sure if it was reef compatable. I got it home, and it started eating my zoos. I brought it back and we made a trade for some Blue Legs.

I think the freebies are because of patronage ;). I've have developed a good working relationship with him.

After reading some posts, I decided to make a trip out to P-Burg Aquarium to look at some Regal Tangs. I personally found the prices to be high compared to other FS in the area. Small Regals were $50, and Flame angels were $65. They had a nice coral selection though, but I'd also have to agree with the other posts that the frags at $20 were sort of high. Hope this helps.

Sometimes he's out there on some things, but most of the time he has reasonable prices and often awesome deals. The frag tank often has alot of nice stuff, but it seems like you have to catch him filling it up. When he fills it, people totally raid it quick.

Here's an example of something I got out of his frag tank. Just behind the pinkish coral there is a similar coral that is orange and green. I'm told they are acans. Also, the zoos and the brown encrusting coral to the right are part of the same coral. He sold it as a 'combo coral' - $20.

I purchase items from this website with great results, good prices and free shipping with a $79.00 purchase. www.saltwaterfish.com

I also ordered from another site in Florida, but now charges for shipping.
