Hi Reefers,

SEABay invites everyone to the next Northern California regional frag swap coming up on October 1.

SEABay Coral Frag Swap 2005

Date: Saturday October 1, 2005
Time: 10:00 am-5:00 pm
Location: Flood Park, Oak Shelter area, Redwood City, CA

Directions and Park Information (http://www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/smc/department/home/0,,5556687_12313301_12328457,00.html)

I will be assisting to organize/categorize frags so if you have any questions at all on anything frag related please post here.

Swap Procedures

As has been custom to frag swaps there will be a category for rare frags and those contributing in this section will be able to choose first in each round. I will help in determining whether or not a frag will qualify in the rare category so if you need help please post here and if you have a picture of the specimen that would certainly help.

We will divide the frags up into various tables and types (e.g., SPS, LPS, soft corals).

As folks sign in they will be divided into different groups of no more than ten. Those contributing to the rare category will be assigned to group(s) that will be making the first selection. All groups afterwards will be chosen at random to make their specimen selection and this will continue until all groups have made their initial selections after which we will reverse the order for a second round and so on until all specimens are gone. Reverse order does not apply to those in the rare category and will continue to have first selection in each round.

Each round will be limited to no more than 5 minutes/group for frag selection (one frag/person/round) and only a person registered for that group may participate in that round to minimize confusion (i.e., no selection assistance from others not in your group).

No browsing frag tables other than for the “current group once the swap starts to prevent confusion and impediments to the group selecting at any given time.

Swap preparation and tips:

For those of you bringing frags please double bag them to minimize potential losses during transport to and from swap.

We also request that you label each bag with frag name (genus/species if known otherwise generic common name), a short description (e.g., pink body with green polyps) and lighting/circulation conditions kept (e.g., high/med/low). For those of you who can provide a printed picture of the mother colony it would be greatly appreciated.

Those planning to participate in the swap should try to get to the site no later than 11:00 am to guarantee a spot in the rotation with the actual swap starting no later than 12:00 pm.

It is also recommended that you bring a cooler or some container to hold and safely transport any critters you come away with.

Swap participation requirements:

To participate in the frag swap you need to be member of SEABay or other recognized marine hobbyist club (MARS, BAR, etc.), membership IDs will be checked so please have your ID handy. For those clubs without IDs we will need a recent membership list that verifies your status or you will have to become SEABay member to participate.

Memberships will be available at swap for $20 individual or $25 for family.

If you do not bring at least one frag for the swap there will be an additional $10 entry fee.

Happy Reefing and hope you can take part,
Tubs

posted before I read your post Tubs :D

So if we have a rare, we should either post here or show up with it?

Hey Gresham,

Posting would be nice just to help get things started if you can :D or to simply reduce the time to do this at the swap. Otherwise we can do it at there at the swap.

Blue polyp rice coral - montipora capitata?
Green edge alien eye mycedium?

I'll probably frag those along with some watermelon zoos and emerald zoos.

I would say blue polyp rice coral is a nice rare piece - would love to see pic for my own curiosity :D.

As for the mycedium, I would tend to say yes as well.

Definately would love to see pictures of these if you have em :P

ooh yeah as advertised LOL - thanks man. Really love that purple polyp rice coral :D. What does everybody say - these should definately not be in the ordinary category right?

Where did you get the rice coral from. The one I've had for a few years is just like that except with ordinarily colored polyps - yours is saweet!

I think the capitata came in on last week's big shipment. I got mine from New Alameda. Atlantis has some too.

Hey! Just back from Tonga and I'm really looking forward to the swap!

Had some issues with my tank while I was gone for 3 weeks, so I am not sure what rare stuff I still have.

Tubs, is Pink Chalice rare? I also have a green acro from Tonga, but I will try to get a pic. I'll see what else I can dig up!

Lefty,

Hope you had a good trip to Tonga - did you visit with Ed and his new coral farm out there - pretty neat. Anyway I would think that the hot pink variety should be in the rare category and not in the common area :D

Any pics deifnately would be cool :D

If anybody is interested in unusual xenia you don't see this variety too often - they are huge. Similar to the pompom (red sea xenia) but much larger.

That was the reason I was out there! Making a film about catching fish with nets. Jim and I were out there before. Pics at www.reefstewards.org. I also swam with Humpback whales. THAT was cool. I also went into decompression during a dive. Not so cool! :D

Man, almost missed the date on this, it'd be a shame if I missed this swap considering it's closer to me than ANY BAR event :)

Anyways, don't know what's rare and what's not nowadays as I'm not much of a trend follower, but if blastomussa wellsi is "rare", I got one of these, purple rimmed, aqua-blue/purple centers. I know it's not an SPS but hey, it's about as rare as I get :)

Here's a picture, the purples probably pop a lot more under bluer bulbs, I currently have them under 10kK halides, and sorry for the oversaturation in the photo (bright white near the top), I'm not very good with a camera.

If its not rare, no biggy :)

Here is the pink chalice. Rare? The one in the back is a Tongan Fade Chalice, that I am not sure if I want to frag yet. :D

Here is the table from Hunter's old tank at Lucky Goldfish in Oakland. Not sure the name. Rare?

Roger, it's good to see that you're having success propagating those beasts. They are definite beauties with their large size and multiple pulsing polyps. Recently, I've been trying to remove all the softies in my tank so that the only ones left are ricordea and zoanthids. I'm still trying to eradicate some nuisance encrusting xenia, yellow polyps and mushrooms.

How big should frags of chalices be? Here's a candidate I'd like to propose for rare status. It's my hot pink with blue edge chalice:

reefkeeper -

I like that blue mille!

OK lefty says the blue milli is in :D.

As for chalices they should be around at least a quarter coin size.

Considering the cost of Blastos lately I'd consider any wellsi rare. That piece would probably go for at least $60 in a store.

Anyone coming to the swap who can sell me some Interceptor? I have a tricolor and a purple that need to be rid of the scourge since they've lost a lot of their color. I think the total volume in my tank is around 200 gallons, so three pills would work out for a three treatment course. For some reason, milleporas don't seem to be affected by the red buggers.

Missed that one. If it is a purple edge confusa then yes but if it is montipora spumosa or spongodes then probably not unless there is a specific demand for it locally.

holy crap.. so I get a rare? damn! Any idea on how many heads I need to frag for a decent trade? (please hurry on the response.. since this is.. tomorrow?? :))

I'm going to be in a situation with a rare pick yet not wanting to get most rare stuff (i'm not really setup for SPS)

A couple of heads would be a good starting point. Blastos have been around for a long time but the market of late has placed a huge demand for them so yeah for that reason its in :D

Alrighty, works for me. I just liked its color and it was relatively cheap (I didn't spend $25 for it), but before I asked I looked online and saw similar types of colonies go for $100+ .. *sigh*

I guess in the last couple of months they've skyrocketed in price. But I wonder how much the real vibrant red with blues/yellows I've only seen once or twice would go for LOL - probably acan type of prices :eek2:

Pinks are cool. Reds with blue and yellow too. Blasto with 3 or more colors per polyp are super nice.

Im not a member of SEABAY, but am hoping to become one tomorrow.

I dont have any frags to share yet, but Id love to pick one up tomorrow.

So if I understand correctly, my $25 membership + $10 no frag fee :) will get me a spot in one of the rotations correct?

Thanks so much!
