View Full Version : Anyone interested in a snail/crab group buy?

Been looking for inexpensive cleanup crew and someone pointed me to the following place that appears to have by far the most inexpensive snails/crabs:

Update - was Aquatic Island (http://www.aquaticisland.com) but now Reef Topia (http://www.reeftopia.com) since the former is sold-out and ReefTopia gets better bulk prices.

Anyone interested in a possible group buy?

Lak - how many do you need?
Bryan - how many do you need?

I'm thinking about placing the following order:

Hermit, Small BlueLeg (600 @ .20 Each) 120.00
Snail, Cerith {Best Variety} (300 @ .60 Each) 180.00
Snail, Turbo (Astrae) (300 @ .34 Each) 102.00
TOTAL: 1200 critters at $402, but get 10% = 362

Scott

that would give us free shipping. :D. I'm not sure what quanity I need but here is what I want:

Emerald Crab
Turbo Snail (can we request sizes)
Cerith Snail
Nerite Snail
Golden Astrea Snails

Lak,

Their free shipping minimum is about $125, so no problem there. If you order more than $200 you get 10% off.

We can order the Emerald crab on a per case basis since many folks don't trust them.

The turbo snails can grow very large and as such are really good at knocking corals over that are not cemeted in. Also, can order on a per case basis.

The golden astrea snails are definitely doable in quantity, but the nerite are $1 each. WOW!

What quantity are you thinking of getting in each?

If we can get all requests in with species _and_ quantity by

close of business Monday, August 22nd

then we should have enough time to bring inverts to the club meeting on Saturday, Aug 27th.

Here's what I need:

[plankton]
600 Hermit, Small BlueLeg
200 Snail, Cerith
200 Snail, Turbo (Astrae)

[jayscube]
20 Turbo Snail
20 Nerite Snail
20 Cerith Snail

20 Golden Astrea Snails

Scott, I'm in for 30 of the ceriths and 12 mini-hermits. I don't like those astrea snails because they can't flip themselves over. Do these guys offer trochus snails? IMO trochus are the best snails out there.

Another option you might check out is floridapets.com I seem to remember them having some really cheap prices for large qty.

plankton
08/14/2005, 12:46 PM
Jake,

Thanks for the link to floridapets.com, but they are very expensive compared to the others.

They don't carry trochus, but they carry a bunch of others (http://www.reeftopia.com/Crabs_and_Snails218.html)

Maybe the 'golden astrea' or 'baby astrea' would be better since less likely to get stuck. Dunno. But, most threads I've read say that the common astrea is the one most likely to eat algae, even though they sometimes get stuck and cannot always right themselves.

I probably want somthing like 180 astrea and 360 ceriths. Depening on the price. And my ability to pick it up.

plankton
08/14/2005, 02:37 PM
My original plan was to bring them to the meeting but then they would have to sit around for about 3 hours and would have to bag them again. Prolly not a good idea.

We sorta have 2 choices and I'd like to see what works best for folks:

1) Come by Friday afternoon/early evening and pick up the inverts in their original unopenned bags floating in my sump to maintain temperature.

2) Come by Saturday after the meeting and pick up inverts from my a holding tank. Small risk that some may die after acclimation and you'd have to reacclimate them to your tank conditions.

ill take 30 blue leg hermits 15 cerith 15 golden astrea

plankton
08/14/2005, 10:59 PM
NOTE: There are three sizes of blue leg: micro, small and medium. If you don't specify which I'll assume you mean the standard 'small'.

NOTE: The difference between astrea and golden astrea is only that the golden astrea are smaller and cheaper.

NOTE: The cerith ($0.75) and nerite ($1.00) are relatively very EXPENSIVE so be careful how many you order. Their ceriths are very large: 1.5" to 2".

Those ordering the above snails please double check your order. Here are rough price estimates that will go down as we hit quantity discounts. The total will also be slighly lower as the 10% discount will not be applied till very end.

[plankton]
300 Hermit, Small BlueLeg $72 (0.24 each)
300 Hermit, Micro Blueleg $66 (0.22 each)
300 Snail, Golden Astrae $75 (0.25 each)
50 Snail, Cerith $37.5 (0.75 each)
Estimate cost = $250.5

[jayscube]
20 Nerite Snails 20.0 (1.00 each)
20 Cerith Snails 15.0 (0.75 100 unit pricing)
40 Turbo/Astrea Snails 13.6 (0.34 each 300 unit pricing)
20 Golden Astrea Snails 5.0 (0.25 each 300 unit pricing)

Jake, thats funny your astrea's didnt flip back over. The ones I have flip themselves over, but it takes them a few minutes.
The only way they died is when my hermits ate them, or they got sucked into a power head.

That doesn't sound like typical astrea snail to me. They almost never flip themselves. I got about 50 of them from exoticfish.com and in a few months they were almost all dead upside down in the sand or rocks, etc... The only snails I have now are trochus and ceriths, no hermits currently.

those are the ones I have or had. Started with 10 now I have 1. I don't know about them not be able to flip themself but I threw my new batch from Mermaid and they all righted themself. The only thing left is for them to get off the glass and get on the rock.

Sounds like you guys must have got some smart ones, or they were not astreas. From the Live Aquaria description in the link above:

"If it falls, it is often unable to right itself, and will need the aquarist to place it upright, again."

Or do a search for "astrea flip" and see what you come up with.

Yeah, that was my reaction when I first saw the prices at ReefTopia compared to what I was paying before. Yeee Haw!

Seriously, if the SAC group gets any larger (e.g. > $200) and line item of at least 300 units, then we should consider breaking the order into 2; because, you get the 10% after $200 and item discounts after 300 or so units.

PS Little Astera are actually pretty good at righting themselves so long as they can grab something and don't get wedged in a rock.

If the order goes below the estimated cost because we hit a new quantity priceing I'll refund the difference to each person. If the price goes 'up' I'll reduce quantity to keep under or at the original estimate.

If we get DOA then I'll petition for refund and give you your percentage of the refund. e.g. if 2 pepermint shrimp are DOA then if reported within 12 hours we are supposed to get a refund and not credit towards next purchase.

Uh, I don't know about nerites, personally I don't like them they crawl out of the water and dry up. But then again I'm the only one who's had astrea snails not flip themselves over. If I had my choice I wouldn't buy anything but cerith and trochus, but there aren't any trochus available (these are the cadillac of snails).

plankton
08/16/2005, 05:04 PM
Trochus typically come in from Indo and are very expensive. e.g. wholesale price of more than $1.75 each and retail even higher.

Cerith are OK and strangely I've lost some by crawling out of the water just like your experience with nerites spp. Go figure.

Scott

mothra
08/16/2005, 05:18 PM
Well cadillacs ain't cheap! ;) these are the only snails I've had live long term besides ceriths which are sorta iffy actually. They aren't big enough to bulldoze really, but are bigger than astreas and can right themselves if they fall. They also do about as good a job as astreas on eating algae, so they are my favorite. Sandra still has one of my original trochus snails from IPSF in her nano cube, that snail is going on 2 years in captivity! (I lost all mine to angry hermits)

Ceriths I like because they the only snail that eats detritus (not to be confused with nassarius that eat scraps of food) but they go all over and clean the glass and rocks too, and can right themselves as well. So they are my 2nd favorite.

plankton
08/16/2005, 06:21 PM
Found an excellent article by Julian Sprung on Nerites spp (http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/sept2003/invert.htm)

To make a long story short. Emerald Nerites ( Smaragdia viridis) are NOT reefsafe and I've taken them off my spreadsheet. That leaves the more exensive $2 reef safes ones:

"Emerald nerite snails Smaragdia viridis

Emerald nerites belong to the genus Smaragdia. They are small and flattened, with thin shells that are translucent and bright green. This color makes them nearly invisible on the seagrass blades where they live. It would be a dream if these exquisite little snails fed simply on epiphytic algal films on the grass, but unfortunately their diet consists not of algal films but of the seagrass itself! They pierce the cells of the grass and draw out the contents, leaving clear spots on the blades. Therefore they are not suitable for most aquariums. Without their seagrass food source they starve within a few weeks.
"

PS Jake - I still have some of my Mexican Turbo snails in my 210 that I added more than 6 months ago. Yes, they knock any coral not cemented down around but they clean glass rear glass really well.

Scott,

Hope it's not too late to get in. But can I get the following?

20 Cerith ($15)
12 Nassarius Vibex ($10)
12 Nassarius Polyhonatus ($15)
1 peppermint shrimp ($3.75)
50 small Blueleg ($12)

If I can, let me know how much I owe. If it's too late - it's no big deal. BTW - thanks for putting this order together.

Thanks
Minh

Minh,

No problem. Spreadsheet (http://www.noackfamily.com/nvr/ReefTopiaGroupBuyv2.htm) updated. Please paypal $55.75 to snoack321@yahoo.com as soon as possible.

Please pickup as early as possible on Friday (8/26/05), since this will reduce any losses. If I have to acclimate them overnight then there there is a greater chance of loss.

PS There are three other folks from more-or-less your area so I don't know if it is possible to coordinate a pickup:

MelodyCorals - Orangevale
Nemos's Data - Elk Grove
little_d - Sacramento

Scott,

Do I need to add in the paypal fee or does that include the paypal fee already?

Nemos' Dad offered to pick it up for MelodyCorals and me. :D

Thanks
Minh

Minh,

Doesn't include paypal fee, but that is OK for now.

Nemos' Dad sounds like a nice guy and glad you could coordinate a pickup.

Order is in!!

With Jesus's help (he ordered 200 small blue-leg hermit crabs) we were able to get the 600 lot size and reduced the cost per from 0.24 to 0.20.

Scott - are you doing a tank tour at your house after the meeting? I have already heard Liz's seahorse tank (excellent talk BTW). However, if there is a tank tour afterward, I might just have to come down. :D I am still trying to decide.

Sure, anyone interested in coming on by after the meeting is invited to do so (about 1/2 hour or so drive from Manteca). I hope everyone by then has picked up their inverts by Friday night, though.

PS Big Red in Fresno is having an open-house to show off his new tank (380gallons?) this Sunday.

Scott,

I will be returning from Tahoe on Friday and wondered if I could pick up my order and Melodycorals order Friday evening around 6-7 PM?

Minh: Did you want me to pick up your order as well? If so, I am meeting Melodycorals at 12:30 PM Saturday in Elk Grove. I won't be available after that so let me know as soon as possbile.

Bill,

Friday evening around 6-7PM sounds fine.

PS Just curious, how are you going to deliver to MelodyCorals on Saturday? Keep inverts in bag for another 12 hours or acclimate them to your tank water?

Scott

Nemo's Dada

Scott,

I'll see you then.

I asked Melodycorals if he wanted me to acclimate them in my tank or leave them in the original bags but haven't heard back. I let him know that if they sit in the bag, he might have some that won't survive. So for now, they're sitting in the original bags until the following morning.

If all goes well I should have them by late Friday morning, so anytime there after.

Bill - I've been told that snails/hermit crabs can survive in a bag for 2 days provided they are not subjected to temperature extremes; but, I wouldn't want to push it. Shrimp and brittle stars are totally different and should be acclimated as soon as possible, but slowly (drip method).

UPDATE: There is a chance that the shipment might be delayed or canceled given a tropical depression that moved into the area. Will update again when I know for sure sometime Thursday morning.

Bummer - I'm out of town starting Thursday through Monday. Next Friday does not work for me, but I dont want to hold everyone else up either. If "Nemo's Dada" can hold for an entire week - then I could do it - but otherwise I would need to bail out or wait.

Scott,

There is a possibility that I may have to drop out of the group purchase. Unfortunately, this coming weekend, I won't be easily available. I am coordinating with Nemo's Dad to see if he can pick the snails up for me, and to see what time I can pick it up from him. If you don't hear back from me by MOnday night - consider it a cancel. :(

Minh

Unfortunately, I won't be able to coordinate with Nemo's Dad to pick up the snails and hermit crab. SO at this time, I am going to cancel. I really appreciate you putting together the group purchase. Thanks again.

I've added your order and mailed ReefTopia the update but won't know if the order will take until tomorrow. So, don't paypal me yet until I know your order got in. If order is a go then critter pickup has to be this Friday. Thanks.

Shipment is a GO and will pick up tomorrow morning (Friday Sept 2nd).

One note which will impact Nemo's Data and justkeepswiming is that they are out of bumble bee snails, so I'll have to credit you for those items. Sorry.

I'll be home all day so when you can come and pick up please do so. Thanks.
