I apologize to Randy for going slightly off forum topic, but I know there are several folks here with professional laboratory experience and I was wanting to get their input.

How strong are the laboratory grade magnetic mixers and could would they be adequate for use in the bottom of a Kalk reactor. My concern is that the stir bar might get gummed up in the kalk and not spin when the stir unit was engaged.

The stirring strength depends on how good the magnets are in the stirrer and the particular stirring bar used.

If you had a lot of excees lime, and the bar stopped and the lime all settled, that could cause it to freeze up. I've had solid/liquid mixtures in the lab freeze up like this.

Still, I have it in the back of my mind that people have successfully used such stirrers in limewater reactors.

Anyone?

I've never had any of my stir bars freeze up, ragardless of what's in the mix.

However, I tend to use the larger, football-shaped bars for stirring and I usually crank the stirring torque up.
