View Full Version : Is long term hyposalinity harmful to fishes in FOWLR tanks?

To avoid recurrences of ich, I am thinking of maintaining 28C and
hyposalinity on a long term basis for several of my FOWLR tanks
at around 1.016-1.017.

Will this be harmful to my fishes? Or will it depend on the individual species? What species can tolerate and what cannot?

I would like to solicit comments from the forum.

When I first bought my tank I kept it at 1.014 and the fish seemed to do fine, the only problem was when one of my fish got ick I was hesitant to lower it anymore. I had a few fish die of ick at that salinity.

So just for your knowledge. 1.016 is not low enuf to prevent ich. I will point you to a thread which asks the same question.

Essentially this thought of keeping fish in "low salinity" is myth-information. To prevent ich you need to keep salinity levels at 1.010-1.009.

To address the second part of your question the salinity level you point to will not harm the fish, there is just no need to keep it that low, unless you are trying to save money on salt. Which is not an excuse.
