I've got a pretty strange situation that's come up, I hope you can help.

This morning I found a 2mm shiny golden-colored rock in the tank that I think is pyrite (FeS2), but could also be chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). I'm pretty sure the rock came from the LFS live sand, but I don't have a clue how it got there. Cu2+ would definately be bad for the tank, but what about Fe4+ and S2- (if the ions became free in the water)?

Everything in the tank looks fine, is that enough to rule out posioning?

Hi Steve,

I don't think these minerals are soluble enough to represent any dissolution hazard.

However, I moving this post to Randy's forum for his take on them.

I agree with Ron. Take it out and don't worry about it unless everything starts to die:D

FWIW, iron won't hurt your tank. In the past year I've added far more iron than your entire rock holds.

Even if the rock slowly dissolved, the sulfide would come out so slowly as to be no problem.

The copper is another issue, of course, but I still wouldn't worry about it without the tank showing problems.
