actinics needed?

picked up a 175 metal halide pendant for a 20 gallon. the bulb is 10,000K HQI - is actinic lighting necessary?

To put it simply, yes and no. Actinics are important for proper growth and coloration of many aquatic organisms but you can get by without them.

I would have to agree that actinics are not needed but bring out alot of color, plus coralline loves it.
