I have had my new 29g setup for about two weeks now with nothing but Carib Sea Sand and Carib Sea Arag-alive sand and the pH is a steady 8.6. I'm wondering what's causing this and have done a small (5 gal.) water change so far. Is it possible that the small amount of pvc plumbing I have done leached glue into my system? I can't think of anything else.

I did the plumbing and ran tap water for a couple of days. Then changed to salt water. I was using a small amount of carbon to start with as I didn't have my sump completed.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've got a live rock shipment coming in tomorrow.

No, that wouldn't impact the pH.

Some salt mixes are high in pH until they equilibrate with the air.

In any case, I wouldn't worry about it. When you add some creatures and fish food, the pH will drop.
