I just got my new MH retro kit today. The bulb itself has a very small piece of loose glass in it. The piece is small enough to sit on the head of a pin, but large enough to rumble around as I rotate the bulb. Do I try it and plug it in, or send it right back?

Wow, is this really a stupid question? I really want to fire it up! I can't remember if glass can conduct electricity or not. Its not as though I'll be shaking the light when lit.

Glass is a very good insulator and will not conduct electricity.

Here's a reply I got from Coral Vue regarding a replacement bulb.

""Hello Ben,

This is something that is common with MH bulbs. A small chip of glass can
come off the base after the metal base is put on. It will in no way affect
the bulb or the light output. If you ever have a problem just let us know
and we will take care of you.

Thanks

David""

Your thoughts?

If it's inside the outer envelope I wouldn't worry about it. The outer envelope is there mostly to protect the other "guts" and a a UV shield. I'd fire it. (If you haven't already)

Yep it's me, I found the place.
Got my new 36" reflector and VHO bulbs, wood is cut for the new hood and I need a new 6500K MH to replace my BlueLine 10000K and I'll be all set. Did you order your RO filter?
Tim

No not yet. Been kind of lazy this whole last month or so :) Really though we are starting to get the house ready to be painted (removing bushes and some repairs) so I think I will be busy on that for a while. I WILL have it before winter though because there is NO way I'm going to stand out there and freeze my but off again :D

Believe me I know what you mean, I spent hours behind Flag City Water in all kinds of weather and all hours of the day. Now all I have to do is remember to shut off the fill valve...

Hey bencpht, How did the bulb work out?

I don't have my canopy yet so its still in the box. :(
The bulb fires up and seems fine. I've asked in another thread and its gotten the same response. The extra shard of glass inside the bulb seems normal.
