View Full Version : Quick tips on posting images in this forum.

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to give a couple of quick tips on posting images in this forum.

Picture file attachments are no longer possible- please read the following tutorial:

Adding Pictures to a Thread/reply
How to use the IMG button:
http://www.reefcentral.com/faqs/imgcode/IMGCODE.htm

and or:
http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=3548544#post3548544

Image Size
Please be considerate of others and try to keep your file sizes within reasonable limits. If you are posting several images, or images of large size (anything over 100k, give or take) please make a note in the subject line.

While a larger file size normally shows the best quality image there are many members who have dial-up internet connections which cause the large images to load very slowly.

Image Resolution
The maximum screen resolution size of the images can be no larger than 850x600 pixels which means that image can be no larger than 850 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall.

If you are posting a wide image remember that many people may have lower screen resolutions which will force them to use the scroll bars to view the whole image. This fine for some images, such as full tank shots, but if you are trying to portray a certain perspective with the image an image that is not so wide is easier to view for those with lower screen resolutions.

Supported File Types
The following file types are attachable:
txt zip pdf htm doc xls. Note that .jpg etc. image files are no longer allowed as attachments.

Image Editing Software
Since most cameras produce image sizes much too large to attach directly to this forum there are some options.

The best place to start is with your software that was included with your camera. Most cameras come with some sort of image editing software that will allow you to shrink the image sizes. Check your camera documentation to see if there is any software included to help you here.

There are also many different imaging software packages that will allow you to modify the size and quality of your images. Some of the commercial name brand products are Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Fireworks to name a few. While these commercial packages are the cream of the crop they can be cost prohibitive for reef keepers on a budget but they will produce some incredible high quality images and allow you to manipulate your images to almost any screen and file size needed.

There are also many good shareware and freeware image editors available that will fit your needs when simple photo editing, such as file size reduction and screen image size reduction, is needed.

Here is a link to Cnet's imaging software download area that might be a good place to start.

Cnet.com Image software download area (http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0,10151,0-10077-106-0-1-0,00.html?tag=dir)

One last thing

Please try to include the type of camera that you using when you post your images. Many of our fellow members are always searching for the perfect camera and would always like to know what type of camera produces such incredible images.

Hopefully these tips will give you a place to start and help you enjoy your participation in this forum to its fullest.

Have fun and lets see those images!

Doug,
Please help!
I have been unable to post any of my pictures to your site (to threads).
Resizing the pictures is no problem. I can get past the point where it was telling me the file was to big by following your directions and adjusting the image size to 850 x 600 or less.
I suspect my trouble is with a step after the image has been resized.
I have been going to the Attach file: box found below and browsing for the picture I want to attach. I select the picture and place it's location in the box (double click the picture). I then preview my reply and there is no picture!
I have also tried just dragging the picture into the reply box. This fills the box with the picture, but then I am unable to move to the next screen.
Suggestions would be most appreciated!
Thanks,
Wrassta

I tried to attach photos to a post last night but kept getting the message that the maximum file size allowed was 51200 bytes. My camera is a 5MP and when I took photos at the lowest resolution and shrunk them to 400 X 300 pixels (too small in my mind), they were still around 100KB. Any ideas?

Check out this thread too:
http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=238259

There are alot of tips, including links to other resources. It's a great place to practice too, since that's what everybody else does.

If your photo is to large you have to either crop/shrink the image smaller or up the compression on the JPG file. I use CompuPic from http://www.photodex.com/ or Adobe photo-shop. I think windows paint can do it too, but it's a pain. I decided I do enough image stuff that I could use a tool like CPic.

You can also find other places to upload them that don't have file restrictions, then link to them in here. I have my own website so I just hide them in there. Most ISPs give you a couple meg of web space..if you can find out from them how to use it. You don't need a "web site"...just a place to upload photos.

I can occasionally get rgentry's to work if I do a right-click and show picture, but it looks like the host is inconsistent with remote links. BTW...To get what I got you have to get the url of the IMAGE, not just the page it's show on. Right-Click on the actual photo and get the properties.

Some places require you to login or atleast be on their site to show an image. www.photobucket.com does NOT so they are a great place to store images to show on web sites...best of all..they're free AND they are totally OK with the concept of you using their site to link directly. Just throw them a donation to keep the owner happy if you use it alot. :)

When you upload it..it makes a thumbnail..you have to make sure you open the image to its full size, or just grab the pre-fab IMG tag done for you on the thumbnail screen:

You have to upload your image someplace...and that address will then point us to the place you uploaded it too. Nobody can see files on your PC...well..a hacker might..but we can't. :) All you gave was a partial file name. Take a trip over to www.photobucket.com. They let you upload your images to them and even provide you with the format of the [img] tag to post in here! Computer literacy not required. :)

Baja...If you upload inside a post, you actually have to go back and get the image after it's upload and use HTML tags instead of [IMG]

<img src=http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=2821751>

You're better off uploading it to your photo gallery in RC (you get free limited space as a member) or using an external source like the one I mentioned.

The image above's HTML tag was done like this:
&lt;img src=http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=2821751&gt;
..it's a little more difficult..but works.

It's actually a pretty simple concept once you get it. The file has to be stored on a PC that everybody can get to (aka a Web Server). The upload feature in a post uploads it alright..but it uploads it without showing it. You have to put the file somewhere like an image gallery..then figure out the web address (URL) and use a special format in here to tell my browser to go get it.

I can't stress the simplicity of photobucket. They lay it all out for you....simple upload procedure..and then they even give you the special format so you can copy and paste it into a post and make it appear. I hope people donate to this guy..there's not too many places out there that are free like that. I even moved my gallery there because it was so easy to use and maintain.

http://img31.photobucket.com/albums/v93/Fizz71/Reef/?PHPSESSID=7ec189f1058c9205a8842944d5175824

Good luck...you'll get it...then you'll smack yourself because of how easy it is. Much easier than building a BWR with wood and metal. :)

You're getting close that "img58.photobucket.com/album/albums/v178/baja272/4.jpeg" is almost a URL, you just need an "http://" in front of it and then put it in between tags not a URL link. You can do it one of 2 ways...1) copy the "URL" field from photobucket, press the IMG button in RC's reply post screen and paste the photobucket URL into the prompt....OR....2) copy the "IMG" field from photo bucket and paste it right into the message portion of the RC reply screen. Both will do the SAME THING! The second method just allows you to better control where it gets pasted..the IMG button always adds to the bottom.

But there is also ONE more problem..you password protected your gallery so it won't work on here. Remove the password protection and this:

[img]http://img58.photobucket.com/album/albums/v178/baja272/4.jpeg

..should start to work. Removing the password protection doesn't allow others to modify your account..it's just a password protection for VIEWING your photos. Modifying your account would require a login whether that password protection is on or not. The password protection would be if you have family/personal photos up there that you don't want everybody to see, and you just want to tell a few folks the password. It's not for image sharing in forums.

Hope this helped...you're close!!!

The pic has to be on a web site or in a gallery on line to link to it. We cant see your hard drive if we could you would have big problems.

well ---- what now --- I can't use the IMG --- cause my photo hosting site use "special characters" in the url to the photo. If I click on the picture it take me there.... I'm using "<img src=http://imageevent.com/snowstar/180reef?p=2&n=1&m=24&c=4&l=0&w=4&s=0&z=2[/url]> " without the quotes....

any ideas??

Don't they usually show the part of the tape measure that has all the numbers on it to show size in photos?

You mean like this, Rothie?

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/5705Feed2.jpg

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/5705Feed2.jpg

This is best done in two seperate instances of IE. One for replying and one for copying IMG link text.
What you do is...
1) Click the thumbnail of a pic in your gallery.
2) Scroll down the page and look for an entry called "Use this in IMG tag". Copy the text there.
3) Go back to your reply and click the "IMG" button at the top of the text box. In the field that appears, paste the text you copied and hit OK.
4) A line will be inserted into your reply. Now hit ENTER twice.
5) Repeat 1-4 for all the images you want to show.

It's that easy. Also remember..."Preview Reply" at the bottom of the Reply to Post page is your friend.

Kev
