Anyone interested in a Hirocks base rock group buy. They sell it by the ton (2240lbs.) for $1700 shipping included. Thats about $.75 a lb. With enough people its pretty cheap. You can check out the site at www.hirocks.com

I would be interested, if we can get enough people!
I bought some awile back and was pretty happy with it.
I could use a little more, and their rubble is great for frags.

Ok I figure it will take a while to get it organized so I figured I would start it now. If you know how much you are looking to get please post it as well,

Are you guys still interested???
I emailed them yesterday and got an email back today. If we order 300lbs he will give 10% off. So we would be looking at $404 for 300lbs. Let me know.

Just bringing this back up. I may be looking to get some more rock, and thought we could see if we could get a group buy organized again.
Rick, are you interested in heading this up again, since you started it, or have you already done something different?

rick051074
01/23/2006, 02:42 PM
I would not be interested at the moment. Im in the process of moving. I will be down the road, but it would be 6months-1 year away. Sorry.

Rick

No problem, I totally forgot that you were in the middle of moving and all that! All these threads tend to blur together over time!
Anyway, I just thought about ordering 30 or so pounds of rubble, and remembered this thread!

Looks like we have some interest going here. Just so everyone knows, this is dry base rock. It is great stuff, I have about 30lbs in my tank now. It's pretty white when you first put it in, but in 6 months or so, it dissapears (if you have good coraline growth)

Here's the website if you want to take a look.
Hirocks (http://www.hirocks.com/Our_Products.html)

I personally want to get the smaller pieces which range from golf ball to baseball, which are great for attaching frags, but I also wouldn't mind a few of the bigger nice pieces.
If everyone wants to let me know which type you are looking for, I can see what we can put together. Maybe we can get a couple of different boxes and do a mix and match.

Hey Chris, when you figure out how much you want email hirock1@adelphia.net (pretty sure thats the current email) he will usually give you a better price if you buy more than the normal 30-60lbs.

Hi, I would be interested in about 30-40 lbs mostly rubble if possible. Let me know. Karen

CH
01/23/2006, 11:20 PM
Thanks Rick, I was wondering if he did that.

I'm going to put together a spread sheet to track everyones order, so hopefully I can get a cost for rubble and a cost for "best". The listed cost is about $0.85 and $1.75 per pound, respectively, so I would plan on that much, with the hope that it may be a little less.

Karen, I will put you on the list! By the way, welcome to the forum! Are you in the Omaha area?

Fantasy Reefer
01/23/2006, 11:21 PM
I think my list is similar to yours chris. I mostly want rubble for frags but a bigger piece or 2 would be ok.

kau_cinta_ku
01/24/2006, 01:15 AM
i may be intrested in 50lbs of good size rock and about 10 lbs of rubble but someone would have to hold it for me till i can get up to omaha to pick it up.

CH
01/24/2006, 01:26 AM
I'll add you to the list for now. If everything works out and we make the order, I can probably hold yours, since I will have it shipped here anyway.

01/24/2006, 09:25 PM
fresh waht??

kj
01/25/2006, 11:43 AM
fresh live rock the stuff from hirocks is dry .It is mined from dry ground not out of the ocean .Iam going to order some liverock that is fresh .already has coraline on it .

rick051074
01/25/2006, 12:34 PM
Hirocks rock came from the ocean. It is dry base rock from Hawaii. Alot of it acually came from deepening Pearl Harbor. Dont quote me on this it is just what I read but cant seem to find the source now.

rick051074
01/25/2006, 12:45 PM
Ok found it. From Hirocks ebay auction. "This Hawaiian Dry-Base Rock is ideal for all marine aquariums. It came from the waters of Hawaii about twenty years ago when they chose to expand one of their harbors."

So it might not have been Pearl Harbor but some other one.

CH
01/25/2006, 01:10 PM
Yeah, it was once in the ocean. On my last order, a lot of the pieces had shell imprints, coral skeletons, etc. It's definately the way to go if you want to save some money. When I upgraded from a 29 to my 75, I bought about 35 lbs of the rubble, although I asked him to throw in a couple of bigger sized pieces. I simply used this, and then added the 30 or so pounds of live from the 29, and it worked out great. I also threw a few pounds of the really small pieces into my sump, and pull it out to attach frags to.
For a new tank, you would still want to buy live rock, as KJ is going to do, to seed it. But in an established tank, it's great to just add and build up what you have, throw it in the sump, use it for frags, etc.

Looks like this is going to be a pretty good sized order. I may have to ask for the money up front, because I don't think I can afford to pay for it all myself. I think I will plan on ordering it next week, so if anyone else is interested, please post. Once I get a total order and a final price, I wll let everyone know their total.

kj
01/25/2006, 01:18 PM
Yes Rick is right it was at one time in the ocean .But has been dry for along time .As CH says it is great to add to a tank that already has been up and running It will purple up real nice I already have some in my one tank .Iam getting the freash to put in a new tank with the dry .

Willie41
01/25/2006, 01:52 PM

What is the diff between hirocks and reeferrock?

I am needing about 50 lbs of large dead rock for tank start up.

What is the shipping cost or is .85 and $1.75 FOB Omaha?
thanks

CH
01/25/2006, 11:52 PM
I've heard that reeferrocks is more porous, but I have no personal experience with it. It also cost about twice as much.
The Hirocks price does include shipping. I haven't been in contact yet to see if I can get a better price, so this cost is directly from their website - for example a 30lb box of the "best" is $52.00 shipped, which equates to roughly $1.75 per pound. Now that I look at it, if you get the 60lb box, it comes out to more like $1.55 per pound.
I'm thinking the bigger order we get, the better price we will get.

I will get all of the pricing taken care of in the next couple of days, and let everybody know.

Here are a couple of pics of the last order I got, just to show everybody.

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/35591rock1.JPG
Here it is in the box

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/35591rock2.JPG
Here's a couple of the better pieces.

You'll notice it's pretty dense, but it still looks good. Some of the pieces were very plain, but supposedly the "best" is, well, better :-)

rick051074
01/26/2006, 12:10 AM
Hey Chris make sure to check ebay. He has a 60lb box of his best on his website for $92 shipped but you can usually win an auction and only pay $75 for the same thing. Like this http://cgi.ebay.com/BASE-ROCK-60LBS-Our-Best_W0QQitemZ7739270773QQcategoryZ20757QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

CH

oh yeah, I forgot about it being on ebay. I'm going to email him directly though, and see what he can do.

huskerreef
01/26/2006, 11:39 PM
a lot of interest, is there a running total yet? I would take 2-300lbs of bigger stuff.

huskerreef
01/26/2006, 11:41 PM
how you going to divide it up when it comes in.....will there be battles for the sweet pieces leaving someone with the scrap.

CH
01/27/2006, 02:10 AM
I'm not really sure, I may have to go through and divide it equally first! In my experience, most of the pieces are pretty equal quality. I will probably order a bit extra, just to make up for some of the crap pieces.
So, I should put you down for 300? (big difference between 200 & 300)
With your 300, it puts the order at about 3 - 60# cases of the rubble and 8 - 60# cases of the "best", $886
Yeah, I will definately have to collect the money upfront for this!

Thought I'd chime in here a little bit. Don't want to get your thread to sidetracked but I bought some from reeferrocks and it is some awesome stuff. But I've heard that some of the stuff from hirocks is pretty good too, and quite a bit cheaper. You might want to check out reeferrocks, when I ordered mine I was trying to get a bunch of people together (they all ended up bailing) and if you order so much he will sell it to you for wholesale price. Can't remember how much iyou have to order though. Just thought you might want to check into it.

If you guys end up ordering through hirocks please post some pictures of their "best" stuff I'm curious as to how good it is.

Just thought I'd share a picture with you guys so you can see what the reeferrocks.com stuff looks like.

whats the final cost per Lb? and when do you plan to do this?

CH
01/28/2006, 11:28 AM
Right now the cost is about $1.55 per pound on the good stuff, and about 0.85 on the rubble.
I am hoping to place the order in the next week or so, as long as it works out for everybody.

Willie41
01/28/2006, 12:11 PM

got2lb sold me on the reeferrock
Final shipping of 55 lbs to my door is $2.32/lb & they will take
a picture of your order before it leaves so your happy and getting
exactly what you want.
I really don't want to put in anything too dense.

CH
02/03/2006, 09:54 PM
Hey everyone, sorry, I've had a hectic week, and I kind of put some things off.

Ok, here is what I have so far for orders and totals:

Willie - 5lbs rubble, 10lbs best - $19.75
Fantasy Reefer - 30lbs rubble, 10lbs best - $41.00
KJ - 10lbs best - $77.50
abbalahdun - 10lbs rubble, 15lbs best - $31.75
KarenJ - 40lbs rubble - $34.00
kau cinta ku - 10lbs rubble, 50lbs best - $86.00
Rick - 30lbs rubble - $25.50
husker reef - 300lbs best - $465.00

If anyone else wants to add to the order feel free. I will place the order as soon as I can collect all of the money. I know its odd to pay for it up front, but I don't see any way that I can afford $886 out of my pocket to make the initial order. I hope everybody is comfortable with this! We can either meet someplace, or you can run by my house, or even mail it to me. Whatever works out for each of you.
