View Full Version : How do kids do it?

Hi all,

Our Kiwanis club hosted a 12 year old baseball all-star team for lunch, and once again I was amazed at what boys can do.

Most of the boys ordered chicken strips, mashed potatoes and gravy AND french fries, and it looked like they hadn't eaten in months. They inhaled more food than most adults could hope to eat, all this being put in a 95# body. One boy ordered a double cheeseburger, fries, mashed potatoes, AND scalloped potatoes (obviously he likes potatoes). The burger was huge, and after he ate it and all the other food, he asked if he could have another burger. Yikes..

What was funny was all these rail-thin boys who were eating every bit of fat they could swallow were surrounded by somewhat chunky adults eating salads.

Ah, the joys of being young.

Brian

I remember being able to do that... eat a whole large Pizza Hut pan pizza by myself and still stay thin as a rail...
Now I eat much much less and STILL gain weight. It all started with college...

Hi Ophidia,

Just ONE pan pizza :) ?

Actually, I did pretty well till I hit about 35. Then I gained as much in the next few years as I had the 10 years before that.

I have some pants (still) that I refuse to throw away because I know SOMEDAY I will be able to get into them again.

Ugh.
I gained 11 pounds over there, Brian, and I honestly don't know if they're ever coming off, tropical heat back home or no.

I too stand in awe of how much my nephews can consume at the dinner table :)

I too can remember being able to consume vast quantities of all sorts of food and not put on an ounce. Now, it's downright depressing to think about. Started putting on the weight after getting married, then gained a good 50lbs after blowing my back out. Now I'm spending time riding the old bicycle to try and get back in shape but I don't ever expect to get that 28" waist back, I'll be happy with 32 :D

gary's nephew came sunday mid-morning to mow for us. senior in h.s., probably 6'3" or so, 250 lbs. at least. all muscle, football player, you get the picture.

my friend who works in a local mom/pop restaurant where everything is homemade brought out a bucket, i mean a BUCKET of sausage gravy and a huge sack of homemade biscuits because she knows gary loves that stuff and i am trying to put weight back on him.

so i ask roddy if he wants breakfast before he mows. oh yeah, that'd be great! i fix a heaping platter (not plate, platter!) of biscuits and gravy and he inhaled it. i was coming out of the back room and saw him in the kitchen. he wanted to know where the rest was. ummm, that's all i fixed. i mean hey, it was enough for TEN guys. he was still hungry so i fixed him another plate. after all, he was about to mow 5 acres for us. :)

brian, who are you trying to kid?? remember, i saw you, even had lunch with you. you can't possibly have an ounce of fat on you. :D

My poor Girlfriend is still amazed at what her 13 year old eats. I just laugh and try and explane he is just warming up for the later teen years.
I waited until everyone else fixed their plate then I cleaned up the rest.
OK I HAD to wait until the rest of the family fixed their plates.

I remember the days when I could eat plate after plate of food and never gain anything. *sigh* Oh to be able to eat like that again....

I ate 15 sloppy joes after swim practice one day in highschool. Then I remember once frying up 20 eggs and eating them with 10 pieces of toast and two quarts of OJ. I think I was 17 in both cases.

Nina, is there anything better in this world than biscuits and gravy?

Debi, it is scary to think that those kids are graduating this year. I am getting so freaking old!

Last I knew, Horge was on The Reef Tank. He is/was a brilliant guy. I miss his wit.

I looove to eat. I consider myself a fat person on the inside. I'll bring a lunch in to work, and eat it within the first hour. If I bring two, I'll eat one and then the other 3 hours later. I can't watch the food network. I'm only 23, and am a healthy weight...

But if I don't change my attitude by the age of 30 I think I will have to be cut out of my trailer....or something. :D

I can remember being a bottomless pit in my teen years. Mom used to tell me it would be cheaper for her to rent me a place if I fed (paid for) myself than her feeding me and half the football team. Funny thing was, we'd go to everyones house for an afterschool snack before dinner.
My personal favorite afterschool "snack" was a dozen eggs, a pound of bacon & half dozen slices of toast & jelly. 16 yrs old, 6'1 185# and I was nowhere near the biggest of my friends & teammates. Mine are all past their teen years, so I LEARNED what Mom meant

LOL...great blast from the past thread.

I never had that all-you-can-eat metabolism. When I was a kid, my mom had to drive to the mall the next town over to buy me "Huskies" jeans--oh the horror! I trimmed down as a teenager, but I never ate a lot. When I hit 23, my already slow metabolism came to a halt. I just look at a box of Krispy Cremes, and I gain a pound. Oh well, if it gets too bad, that's why God created liposuction.
