Hopefully there's something to it... because I'd like all of you to keep 'em crossed for me this afternoon. I have my first job interview later today, with a small fiber optic related startup company that I'm really interested in. I applied for a job that I'm only moderately qualified for, so I have a feeling that I'll need all the help I can get. (mine are already crossed)

you know it dude, when I'm in between questions on my exam at school tonight, I'll have em crossed up for ya! Good luck, I could be in the same boat very shortly, so I figure if I wish you good luck now, it'll bring me good luck later! :D

Good luck; I hope it went well.

You are right to stretch a little and apply for jobs you may not have 100% of the qualifications for.

These guys haven't been moving at the speed of light... I finally got my response... and it doesn't seem like I'm gonna have any big problems... It turns out that they have an unposted job that better fits my qualifications (yipee!) and my preliminary phone interview went really well. (I interviewed with him on my cell phone in the middle of the Ralph Lauren store in downtown SF!)

On top of this, I had a VERY aggressive recruiter from a similar company approach me to try and get me to join them. HeHe! I played this one really cool, and they guy just about asked me how much money it would take to get me over there. Hmm...

So THANKS EVERYONE for the support. I'm not out of the woods yet, but this is a good start. (FWIW - I'm already happily employed)

Frisco what do you do?

CH - I've been working as a "MOCVD Engineer" for the last 2 years for a small semiconductor (or actually photonics) company developing a really fancy high speed night vision camera, fancy near-IR and visible photon counters, and electron sources for next generation e-beam lithography equipment. Which means what? Hmm... (For anyone that has no idea what I'm talking about, it's a similar idea to the PAR meter common in the hobby - except we are able to count individual photons)

For anyone still awake... I'm the guy in charge of insuring that there's a supply of "light sensitive chips" (similar to a CCD in a digital camera) for the camera and other projects. Our chips don't use silicon (like most common chips in consumer markets) instead making a semiconductor from a mixture of from group III and group V atoms. So I develop recipes to "grow" a perfect crystal (similar to a gemstone) of these III/V semiconductor materials and make them into useful devices. This has historically been a very high cost niche market, because it's pretty hard to reliably and repeatably grow the crystals that are high quality witha good yield.

Thankfully, times are changing and the market for this stuff is blowing up. Many of the components used in fiber optic communications rely on the same types of III/V materials: all optical switches, solid state lasers, multiplexers, cell phone receivers, etc. Just about everything broadband...

A good example is SDL and JDS Uniphase (In the news this week for a big merger) SDL makes a small III/V laser on a chip that's used as the light source that feeds the signal down a fiber cable. To get a feel for the growth (and hype) in this type of market, their stock has gone from about $4 to $650 in the last 18 months, without dropping like most "all hype" stocks. (SDL is next door from where I work)

I'm excited because the company I applied with is developing a similar laser on a chip that puts out way more power than conventional lasers, at a much lower cost. This means that you can run longer lengths of cable without as much expensive hardware to clean up and amplify the signals.

I'm off to a semiconductor trade show up in SF... We'll talk reefs later!

hehe... let the bidding begin! the day of the show truned out to be great - what a zoo. But what a great day also. I saw a couple frinds that I've been out of touch with for the last 5 years and I got free tickets to go check out the Giants-A's game at the new Pac Bell Park in SF. 17th row right behind 1st base! I'm not a big baseball fan, but it sure sounds like fun to me!

Don't uncross them yet. Cause one of them just informed me that the "aggressive" recruiter I spoke about was totally wrong and was trying to hire me for a job that no longer exists. Thankfully, the other one just emailed me to arrange an interview sometime in the next week or two. This is actually a blessing in my mind - now my decision will be easier!

BTW - I guess it's safe to mention the name of the company that I'm NOT going to work for: www.endwave.com (http://www.endwave.com) They make RF transeivers and antennas for broadband wireless (20-40 GHz) communication, attempting to brige the "last mile" problems that many small and medium sized businesses face when attempting to hook up to a fiber network. Laying fiber all the way to a building in an established neighborhood can be very costly, and this company makes the required equipment to send lots of data wirelessly. Their current products allow data transmission rates 10X that of a T-1.

And Q - I forgot to mention earlier that I got mine crossed for you two!
