Good job Larry welcome back to the Reef scene. I have a very fast growing Xenia if you need some.

...of course, the tank itself could be crooked...hehehe... :p  :p

But seriously, Larry, that is one handsome tank. Are you going DSB with it?

OK Larry, the tank and light hood are parallel, now let's see the bubble level in the next photo! <G> :p

No horge, and I know that I may go to hell for this. Just enough arragonite to cover the bottom glass, and that's it.

Contrary to most people, I have not had great luck with DSB's. OTOH, the experimental tanks I have kept with little or no sandbed have done great--no algae or cyano problems primarily. And, nitrates have stayed at zero. I understand where Ron is coming from with his approach, it just hasn't worked well for me. I think mostly because I haven't had the proper critters in the sand beds. That is a hassle too, IMO.

I figure if I go heavy on the live rock, and have a good sized macro-algae refugium I can keep a good amount of 'pods for a future mandarin, feed fairly heavily, and keep nitrates low or at zero. But time will tell. It's all just one big experiment to me. :)

Ch--see my other thread. Fans do the trick.

Hey Larry:
Any chance of you going out on a tank leveling tour? I know of a couple of tanks out east that are nowhere near as level as yours...

BrianD
07/10/2000, 08:56 PM
Looks very nice, Larry. BTW, I have some of your devil xenia, too. I think I got it courtesy of Henry.

Do you already have all the rock you need, or are you going shopping?

Brian

I hope it doesn't look like I'm bragging about the tank being level. I took a little heat about that possibility after the big break. The last tank was as level as this one is.

Brian--I have about 100 pounds lined up. That will have to do for now, but I want to add another 50 or more later. I might try some of the gulf-view stuff, or maybe Paragon's, or.....who knows. :) I'm kind of curious to see just how good the Gulf-View rock is.

I have wondered about the Gulf-view rock myself. If it is like Tampa Bay SW, don't get it. The rock I got from TBSW was like concrete. Very dense and boulder-like. It had interesting life, but you sure as heck couldn't aquascape with it very well. I am much happier with my Fiji rock.

BTW, I have ordered from Paragon, HA, and PA, and they all had nice rock.

Larry M
07/10/2000, 09:26 PM
Brian--From what I hear, it's not like Tampa Bay. This is real rock that was mined from Bermuda, I think, on-shore and then placed in the ocean for 5 years or so. Dale gave me the lowdown on it once. People that have gotten the stuff really rave about it.

Martyn--I've tried getting some full-sized pics with this digital camera, and they don't come out well. To get enough light in the room there is too much reflection off the glass. So this weekend I am going to fire up my 35mm and see what I can do.

I thought Tampa Bay had changed their rock to a more pores style rather than the boulder type?? My father inlaw plans on going to Tampa Bay this weekend so I will let you all know.

Hey Larry there you go Like i said on the tank break thread you could end up with something special.
And this looks much better than the broken tank and you get a fresh and new start etc.
How about a photo showing the whole tank and stand in the room it is in.
Great feeling for you to be setting something up totaly new.

Dwayne--It is 100% RO/DI water, about 150 gallons at the rate of 9 gallons per day. LOL That's what I've been doing for the past two weeks.

Chessman, there will be no bowing here, sir!! All I did is set the tank in place, as luck would have it the floor is level in that particular spot.
