But Who's counting... In a very rare event my wife and I are going to go to the movies.

Loved the book, been waiting for the movie. My fishing buddies have been waiting too. If you haven't read it, but like the ocean, fishing & boats... The book is wonderful. So is Linda Greenlaw's "The Hungry Ocean" This week on the Discovery channel, they are showing tons of ocean fishing stuff.

BTW, finally got offshore this weekend. We got a 291 pound Thresher. You got to watch out for both ends on those guys.

I'm waiting for the movie too, I love stuff like that. I haven't read the book, maybe I will have to hunt it down. Same title as the movie?

Larry:

Same title. Very well written & researched. Better yet, it is in paperback now. Descriptions of what it is like to be in a storm out in the middle of nowhere on the ocean are excellent, and IME accurate.

Discovery channel this week (at least tonight) is excellent.

The book was great. I can't imagine being out to sea in a storm like that. That storm was bad enough on the coast, never mind the open ocean.

Hey O'man--thanks for the heads up about the show on Discovery last night. Since you are an hour ahead of us we turned to the channel in time to catch a riveting documentary on how "The Perfect Storm" was made. Damn, what a fascinating story. Now I have to go find that book.

Like one of the narrators said last night, "No one can imagine the hell they went through."

Larry:

Glad to get lucky with the timing. Linda Greenlaw, captain of the Andrea Gail's sister ship, has an excellent book about swordfishing at the Grand Banks.("The Hungry Ocean") Also worth the read.

While I absolutly agree with the narrator about the imagination part and the horror, I most likely flatter myself when I think I have a clue. Several years ago I helped run a 44 foot open sportfishing boat in 25 to 30 foot seas with some bigger waves mixed in. I'm lucky, though, because we made it back.

Whoops -wait a minute - do they die? Can't go if they die.

The Patriot opens this weekend, too - looks like Braveheart circa 1776. Will probably be good though. I kind of dispute an Australian playing the title role though - I know he was born in the U.S. but...

If you want to laugh go see Chicken Run - Fishdaughter and I went last weekend - funny show - "I don't want to be a pie."

I go to a movie about once a year, but I am eager to see The Perfect Storm. I read it on the rocky coast of Acadia in Maine in May.

The Patriot - "Braveheart circa 1776" - That is what I thought also when I saw the commercial - Like when he rides the horse carrying a flag to rile up the troops.

The book was great and I can't wait to see the movie. The preview clips look like they've captured the horror of the situation, especially the one of the boat climbing the enormous wave.
There has been lots of controversy about some parts of the story, especially the sailboat Satori and rescue of its crew. For the owner's side of the story, see: http://world.std.com/~kent/satori/
