View Full Version : Will the color come back...

Not a very good day...

I woke up this morning to a burning smell from my "aquarium room".
I looked in the sump and found that one of my heaters had burst. After seeing that, I noticed the temperature was down to 71 degrees. So I immediately pulled the heather out and stuck a bag of carbon in the aquarium. I also went ahead and turned the VHOs on to heat the aquarium up faster. At about 4:00 today, I did a water change. But, now that the smell is gone, I have alot of corals that look really white. They are not completley white but have that white haze to them (not showing their true colors). Will the colors come back or have I lost alot of corals? If so, how long does this usually take?

Let me know what you think I should do besides wait. :(

That sucks, Rick!!

I'd give it a day or so and keep an eye on things.
Does it look like tissue loss or just color?

sounds like they bleahed their colors probly from the swing in tempature would be my guess everything you have done so far is what i would have done with the water change and all i wouldn't get to worried about it i suspect they will color up in a couple of days justkeep eye on water quality and good luck rick

Yeah it sounds like they bleached. I've had lots of corals bleach in the past, and the large majority of them have recovered from it, but have taken a while to reach their full color again (although some have gotten even better)

thanks- that's what I needed to hear. When the lights were on, there was very little polyp extension. The lights have been off for about 2 hours now and now the polyps are fully extended on all the corals. That's a good sign. I hope everything makes it through the mishap.

BTW- Stephen, I think it was a Marineland

I know its only been 5 days but I'm getting kinda scared that the colors won't come back. Everything still has that white "haze" to it. Nothing has real color. All of my water paramenters are good. I will see if I can take a picture tonight. I haven't taken any because I don't want to remember this :) . I think I'm just impatient.

Here's a couple of examples of mine, maybe it'll ease your anxiety.

Efflo when I first got it (November, 2004)

Finally turned brown in mid December

And this is how it looked at the end of January, which also happened to be the first time it extended it's polyps.

Jason. that efflo looks like it is getting to big and will start shading out your other corals. You better take preventative measures before its to late.
