I just finished upgrading my plumbing from 3/4" flex to 1" PVC. Boy has my flow increased!! :D

My problem now is that my HOB overflow is noisey as all get out. I had a Stockman Standpipe on it but that doesn't seem to be working now that I increased the flow.

I am in the process of building a new one in hopes that I can get it tweaked to work.

In the meantime, I'd like some ideas on how you keep yours quiet.

try a 90 degree elbow sitting in the overblow box before the drainpipe

Not sure I understand, pic? Kinda like a Durso? I don't have room for a Durso, that's why I'm making the Stockman, although the one I had doesn't seem to want to work now.

Gary, I would like to quiet mine as well, could you post some pics of your upgrade so I can get a few ideas?

hmm hard to say without tinkering with it,

mine used to be noise but i have a drain hose, i just bend the hose to get the water to match the overflow speed and it shuts up

it gurgles because its draining to fast for the overflow u tube to keep up

I'm not getting gurgling from the u-tube chamber into the drain. The gurgling is coming from the drain tube. Wonder if I increased the size of my drain hose if that would help?!?

Here is the link to what I tried to build:

Go to Popular Modifications and click on Stockman Hangon Overflow.

is the gurggling coming from where the water enters the drain or exits?

I did some nosing around and I've solved the "flushing" problem I was having. I am now getting a loud sucking air noise through the air hole. I saw that Stockman is now using an airhose to muffle the sucking air sound. I'm gonna pick some hose up and see if that helps any.

Boy I wish I had internal overflows!!

my internal is noisy as hell

how about the air hose plus one of those little venturie air hose mufflers? the ones that power heads give you with all the attachments

I tried that and not much difference. I think the drain hose is generating the sound down at the sump and it's just reverberating back up. Not sure how to fix that.....

ok sounds similair to the problem i had, if you are using the flexible drain hose

if you have any slack in the hose twist it or make it drain in a on straight pattern. Mine drains in a 1/2 S shape if its straight it guggles and makes all kind of noice, totally quiet now.

Thanks red. I just received a reply back from Ken Stockman. He said that I need to create a little bit of back pressure in the drain line. I've been doing just the opposite, trying to reduce the back pressure.

exactly, the curve in the drain pipe does that...i guess i am not scientific enough

I may have to get a longer piece. My is cut way to short now, or I could probably add some 1" PVC to the end.

I am having the same problem with my tank, if i knik my hose it solves the problem, but as soon as i let go of the hose it straightens itself and starts gurgling again.

When i twist it, it restricts the flow too much and slows the draining.

How were you able to keep the hose kinked without slowing the draining too much?

Would a faster pump help the situation?

Ken Stockman suggested putting the discharge deeper in the sump. I'm gonna try it on my next day off. In the meantime I've got the prefilter put back on, it's quieter than the sucking air noise. I will post a follow-up on Tues or Wed.
