excellent its all this club chit chat... :)

lets see marine life. I am using a logitech quickcam IE $40 at walmart.

I have it running through webcam 1-2-3 software (which is like a little dns server on my computer) $40 for the software but i tried others and this was super easy so i figured i would go ahead and pay for it

I am just running a usb feed from camera to computer which broadcasts via roadrunner. my websit just links people to my ip address to view camera. I have the camera set to 30 fps but i looks like via the web i am only getting maybe 1 or 2 fps. But the direct link i see from my computer is smooth as a babies butt. Now i can watch my tank all day.

I get one frame every 5-10 seconds or so. Is it supposed to do that?

Micki
03/28/2005, 11:53 AM
LOL I think they make medication for that! :D

are you on dialup? it would depend on how many people are viewing it and how fast your computer can refresh the video. on my internet connection (not my direct camera feed) i am getting at least 1 frame per second.

i am going over to school in a bit and will connect and check how quick it is via a T 1 connection

marine - i put our two webcams side by side and on my computer they refresh almost the same. i think yours might have refreshed about 1/3 of a frame per second faster than mine.

marinelife

it is possible, I need to move mine a little an mount it. Someday maybe

redpyro

i used an old mag float i had for a smaller tank, expoxied a piece of wood to it and mounted the camera screw to the wood, so i can just move the magfloat around and position the camera anywhere on the glass

You need to tell your fish to come over to the camera more, they all stay at the one side, the coral beauty is the only one that I have seen over by the camera

what was the software that you found that keeps your ip address from changing? did it come with the camera or was it seperate?

redpyro
03/28/2005, 01:58 PM
i'm not using a software there is a trick on the web to try...just search around for it on google...i the link at home and will post it, will owrk for most XP users. its a way to trick the modem from refreshing itself. you set up in the scheduler to refresh its self every 10 hours or so and that way your ip wont expire. been ok so far, plus i figure if it only changes once every few months and the trick doesnt work i can simpley change the link on my cam page very easily.

Keep the Same IP Address on a Cable or DSL Modem Connection

Last week I mentioned a trick you can use to keep the same IP address on your cable or DSL connection. This trick may or may not work for you, depending on how your Internet provider has configured their servers to assign you an IP address.

1. Click Start and then click the Run command. In the Run dialog box, type cmd in the Open text box and click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /all. Note the number of hours between the time the lease was obtained and the time the lease will expire. This number will vary depending on the provider.
3. Click Start and then click the Run command. In the Run dialog box, type notepad in the Open text box and click OK.
4. In Notepad, type ipconfig /renew and press [ENTER].
5. Click the File menu and then click the Save As command.
6. In the Save As dialog box, type "c:\iprenew.bat" in the file name text box. Be sure to include the quotes, they are important! The quotes insure that notepad does not add the file extension .txt to the end of the file name. Click Save.
7. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools and then click on Scheduled Tasks.
8. Double click on Add Scheduled Task. Click Next on the first page of the Scheduled Task Wizard.
9. On the program page of the Scheduled Task Wizard, click the Browse button. Type c:\iprenew.bat in the File Name text box and click Open.
10. On the name for the task page, you can give the task any name you like. Then select the daily option. We will change this later. Click Next.
11. Leave the default settings on the time and day page and click Next.
12. On the credentials page, your computer name and user name should be automatically entered. Enter your password and then confirm it. Click Next.
13. On the last page of the Wizard, place a checkmark in the Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish. Then click Finish.
14. On the Advanced Settings page for the task, click on the Schedule tab. Click on the Advanced button.
15. In the Advanced Schedule Options dialog box, place a checkmark in the Repeat task checkbox. Put a X in the Every text box and change the duration to minutes. Select the Duration option button and type 24 in the hours(s) text box. Note that the value of X should be less than one-half the number of minutes you calculated in step #2. Click OK. Click Apply and then click OK. This method will only work if you are using a DSL or Cable modem. If you are using a cable router, the IP address is assigned to the router, not the Windows XP machine that is connected to the Internet.

There are still options if this method doesn't work for you. Even if your IP address continues to change, you can still access your computer using a name rather than an IP address. Programs like TZO (http://www.tzo.com) and No-IP (http://www.no-ip.com) register your new IP address on their DNS servers so that your computer can always be accessed using a computer name like www.xpnews.tzo.com or www.jsmith.hopto.org. People will always be able to access your Web site or FTP site using the name, even if your IP address changes! I've used these services for years and they work great.
