View Full Version : Refractometer?

Anyone know the best place (local or on the web) to get a decent refractometer at the best price? Yesterday I used my awesome IO hydrometer that I won in the raffle at the meeting to compare to the results of the DeepSix hydrometer I already had and came up with two vastly different readings.

IO - 1.030
D6 - 1.023

So, as you can see, I have no confidence in either of them now. I've been looking around and want to make sure I get the best value, since it's a pretty considerable investment for such a small piece of equipment. But like my wife told me when I was shying away from the expense, "We haven't skimped on anything else for the aquarium up to this point, why should we start now?" But I still want to find the best bargain... no sense in spending an extra $20 somewhere.

I have the the MR100ATC by Milwaukee Instruments. I got it from eBay for around $100 (it may have been a little less, I don't remember exactly) including shipping.

i have a refractometer if you want to swing by and
calibrate your hydrometers until you get one.

Thanks, Rick. Probably not necessary - I anticipate making the purchase fairly soon, and the tank seems to be thriving under current conditions, so I'm not in panic mode. Just thinking long-term right now. :)

Great! Thanks, Greg. That's quite a reasonable price compared to some I've seen.

Actually, now that I think about it, I got mine for around $70-$75 shipped. The reason $100 came to mind is that is how much my parents gave me at Christmas 2003 to put toward it....they were bewildered by choices, so they let me make the choice :)

I took Greg's advice and ordered the one from Premium Aquatics. Just waiting for the UPS man to bring it now. :)

Todd,

I couldn't find one on the Dr.Fosters site for les sthan $42.00. Do you have a link to the $29.00 one? I would really appreciate it.

If anyone has the $42.00 one, I would like to know how good or bad it is.

Thanks.

As I said before, mine works great I haven't even had to calibrate it yet.
