I know several emailed me their lists, but it will be easier and more direct to just post them here...

Oops!, sorry Keith, yes I messed the date up...

Todd's Wishlist:
Trades: red, purple, and green stripped shrooms (all single and unattached). Blue (sort-of) tipped staghorn. Orange, green, and purple montipora digitata. I can also make up little rocks of bright orange and bright orange with a neon green rim zooanthids. Also have frags of a brown acro that turned really cool for Keith -- I guess it needed 19.8 W/G...my wimpy 11.6 just wouldn't cut it :) --but nonetheless frags are available if anybody wants to give it a shot.

Wishlist: LIVEROCK (for my 40G), Southdown (also for 40G), and other stuff that will do well under PC's in my 40G. Oh yeah, and as always... Magyar's fungia :)

Is that the right date? I thought it was on the 26th not the 16th. Must be a typo. Make sure nobody gets confused. Ill post an availability list with pictures.

Ideally I'll sell this MH unit {or trade it} locally so we have some more SPS growing in the region, but I'll only bring it if somebody is serious about aquiring it.-

I don't know if there would be any members interested in combining on the purchase of a "top pick" table coral from Dr. Mac,as some of these Acro's have recently become available but are VERY expensive when shipping is added. These corals are beyond my personal budget, but if fragged between members that chip in,we could all benefit from our reef association. The availability is posted with pix of each specific coralhead on Dr. Mac's site, and we could time delivery for the day of,or day before the meeting.Get in touch with me...

Can you give me some info on the MH system you have for sale? Size, color, price, etc.

For some reason I can't upload pictures. I did it the other day, it's not working now.

Kevin, is there a way we can link to a trade page on the web site? And could we have permission to upload images to it?

List of stuff to trade:

Green star polyps covering a 4" diameter rock.
http://usr.myip.org/person/trade_green_star_polyp_rock.jpg

Green star polyps on a 4" clam shell.
http://usr.myip.org/person/trade_green_star_polyp_shell.jpg

Green star polyps on a 1.5" dia rock.
http://usr.myip.org/person/trade_green_star_polyp_small.jpg

Green zoanthid polyp patch on a 3 x 5 rock.
http://usr.myip.org/person/trade_green_zoanthid_rock.jpg

Richordia yuma - about 2" dia. on a small shell
(Todd may want this one).
http://usr.myip.org/person/trade_richordia_yuma.jpg

Xenia elongata, 2 pieces - one 3" tall, one 5" tall. Willing to trade one or the other.
http://usr.myip.org/person/trade_xenia_elongata_big.jpg
http://usr.myip.org/person/trade_xenia_elongata_small.jpg

Here's what I'm looking for:

Richordia and LSP that are blue, purple, yellow, orange, or bright red.

Small to medium sized weird shaped live rock, like branches.

(2) 36" VHO bulbs, or equivalent PC setup.

Well, Im looking forward to seeing everyone again. I hope everyone got everything they wanted for xmas. I heard there are quite a few new members this month. I welcome them to anything I have on the following list unless noted. Free of charge but only if you give them a good home.

Availability:
Orange Montipora Digitata
I could make maybe 2 frags
http://usr.myip.org/magyar/frag_orange_digi.JPG

Purple Montipora Digitata
All you can eat basically. I know allot of peope have this though.
http://usr.myip.org/magyar/Frags_purple_tip.JPG

Unidentified Montipora (Montipora Spongodes)
It looks kinda ugly but its different. It resembles a cross between Montipora Capricornis and Montipora Digitata with both plating and branching structure. The polyps are brown but the base is a very nice green. I can make a small frag of this.
http://usr.myip.org/magyar/Frag_unidentified_Monti.JPG

Hydnophora (pilosa?)
This stuff is very furry. IMO, its a great begginner coral. I can make a couple frags of this.
http://usr.myip.org/magyar/frags_hydno.JPG

Seriatopora
Fast grower. I can make a couple frags of this stuff.
http://usr.myip.org/magyar/frags_birdsnest.JPG

Montipora Capricornis
Here is a good one. I have a colony of green and orange growing together. I can make one frag that has a small amount of both.
http://usr.myip.org/magyar/frags_orange_with_green_cap.JPG

Green Slimmer
Whats the heck is the real name of this stuff. Who cares, it grows so fast.
http://usr.myip.org/magyar/frags_slimmer.JPG

Green Torch Euphillia
My objective is to get this stuff to as many people in NY as I can. I think I gave it to close to 8 people now. I'm giving away half of what I have for one person.
http://usr.myip.org/magyar/frags_torch.JPG

I will only bring what you ask me to bring so make sure to get ahold of me.

My wants:
Hmm, a bigger reef maybe :fun4:

Mini Stars from someones refugium or sump. Chucker? Gary?

Blue fiji polyps. I heard they were around.

Any sps that I dont have already. Oh Ill make room damit!

Till then,
Keith Magyar

Sorry Craig, you need a name and Password to log into my ftp server and post the pics. Don't wanna leave my computer wide open for just anyone to write file's to it :-)

I'll set you up with an account later today (if I can remember), and then you can stuff all you want up here. I'll send you an email with the details. Those pics you emailed me are already posted there, if you want to reference them, just go to :

Craig, you have some webspace with rr, why don't you use it for pics?

Demose- thought that "shotgunshrimp" guy was you... Don't you know that you only get satisfaction if you grow those "huge" sps colonies yourself?? lol
Hey, I noticed you have a couple photosynth. gorgonians... I picked one up a few weeks ago. How long have you had them?

Anyway, I think I am looking for a pound or so of some decent Livesand, and some critters. (I'll email you ReeferMac)

ALso running low on "Golden Pearls" or other type of zooplankton stuff. If anyone has any to spare, can trade frags for all the above!

ReeferMac

Dave - You know I got your bugs... That's a silly question ;-)

Gary - got a piece of leather that was kinda yellow-ish.. turned pinkish on my, don't know if you want some or not. Craig has the parent colony now (prolly fragged the **** out of it ;-), might have better luck getting a frag from him.

Randy - What kinda lights you have, I forgot? I might have something new (you haven't seen yet), that _might_ hold up under a boatload of PC's.

I'll take a piece of either, preferably green. If dmorel wants green, I'll take brown. Thanks. So, if you want something from my list let me know. Todd has staked a claim on one of the green star polyp rocks and the richordia yuma. We may have a circular trade? kind of?

Hi Gang,

I have a fair amount of xenia and a very friendly but getting pretty big emperor snapper.
They are both visible here (http://www.morelweb.com/URS/snapNxenia.jpg)

That pic is funky cause my digital camera was purchased long before my tank.

I can make saturday around 3:30 or anytime sunday if we are still having that discussion :)

Hi Everyone from a newbie.

I have a nice frag of a finger leather if anyone's interested. I know this stuff grows easily under even moderate light. (in fact, I think it does better shaded a bit from my 175 halides.) Anyway, I have a couple of nice pieces mounted to a shell. Let me know if anyone wants some.

I don't know if you guys scrolled through top-pick on his web pages, but some of those Acro's are not in the trade around here. Gary:

I'm just learning to keep sps corals in my tank. Have a hydnophora that seems to be doing well as well as a turbinaria (I know, not really sps). Anyway, I'd be interesting in trying one of Dr. Macs out with you. Would like your expertise in picking one. I would prefer one in the red, pink, blue or purple in that I have plenty of green in my tank (really big colony of green star pollyps.). If you're still interested, drop me an e-mail. Thanks.

I would guess your lighting is enough to maintain one of these Acro's.You might want to make sure that there is enough alternating currents if you plan on adding any table Acro. What Monti's or Acropora do you have? If you have not tried any ,perhaps you should start with a tank raised frag from the get-together,and we will go in on a Dr. Mac @ the spring meeting...if all grows well so to speak.I am still open for others to add their thoughts...did you guys see what pieces he has ?????

Kevin: what frag for what frag?

I was thinking if you were going ahead and ordering the Dr. Mac Prize Pic, to bust up amongst a couple of memebers... I'd trade you a frag, for a piece of the new one. I just don't have the spare cash anymore to spend on things like coral. That's all I was suggesting :-)

I'll have to get you over to the house to see some of the new things I've gotten Gary. Couple in there you haven't seen yet. One of these days we'll get around to it, and manage to swap a few things ;-) I'll take a piece of that Chaetomorpha if you're giving, but don't know what you'd want out of my tank. I hesitate to just bring a few frags down in the hopes that you'll like one.

Steve - Got ton's of Algae, that's not a problem :-) Throw that stuff out all the time. How much you want? How much sand do you want? How big of a bed are you seeding? I can scoop out a bunch of worms and whatnot, and throw a little sand in for good measure, but don't think I could trade away a pound of it.. I just don't have any sand around to replace it (dead or alive). Don't wanna drop the bed down too much. You'll do better with just the worms anyway, IMO.

Well Thank Demose for coming over last night and making me break off a branch of one of my favorite's.... :p Branch was a little bigger than I was hoping for.. like half the colony. Oh well - now I got a few more frags available to trade. This is one of the nicer corals I have/seen, so I can't give these frags out for free (hell, I can get 20 bucks for 'em at The Fish Place)

Have 2 frags separate, the third's mounted onto a rock with 2 other corals on it (a 'shroom and a piece of http://reef.myip.org/frames/images/hard/sps/brown_blue.gif ).

Playfair
01/21/2002, 09:17 AM
Gary, dude you're just dying to drop $140+shipping on one of those corals, eh? Well, FWIW, here's my $.02 opinion...

First, those pics suck. For that much money, I want to see a full screen size, under some "normal" lights. Digi cams have funny responses to all that blue. (I've been taken before on wishful coloration).

Second, those are totally wild colonies, and just because they lived 4-5 days in the holders tank to "take a rest", I don't think they have the survivability that tank raised would have. That's a lot of $$ to have something die...

Third, with the exception of a few, most don't have the most impressive coloration either...

With all that said, there are one or two that I would go in on ;) , but I won't spend more than $30 on one, so you would have to find quite a few to split it with. Sorry to drain on your parade man!

Gary Majchrzak
01/21/2002, 09:38 AM
I will agree those pics suck.I'm willing to bet that most of those coralheads are nicer than they appear- plus they are usually loaded with commensals-----kinda' RISKY! But I'm willing to roll the dice on these and probably will sometime soon......BTW.....I have been using the Turbo Ca.
Need anything for the shindig,Dave?

Gary Majchrzak
01/21/2002, 10:22 AM
A few more reasons other reef societies have purchased a large coral to frag:
* to perform experimentation on coloration in different members tanks-the frags color up differently in different systems
*to guarantee someone has a particular coral in captivity
*to defray costs {obvious}
*to take advantage of the society and the meeting itself
And in this instance ,you have the hemostat Dave, the best fragging tool for the job!

Hey Kevin,

For the Algae, I'm only looking for a few feedings worth. I don't have a refugium and have zero room in my unlit sump, so there's no place to keep it! Unless you can freeze it. Anyone ever tried that? I wonder how well it would hold up.

I only have about an inch of sand in the tank. I have a some worms growing in there, but not very many different kinds. Where does one get the Southdown Play Sand? Is it pretty fine grain?

Thanks,

Steve

I don't think freezing would work well... When water freezes it expands, and since the algae cells are mostly water, this tends to burst them. Hence why you don't see too much Phyto getting frozen out there... I'll just grab a handful and drop it in a bag for ya.

I'll dig some bugs and worms out, and throw them in with the algae. I hate to promise anything specific, it's always hit-n-miss when you actually sit down to start digging, but should be able to round up a good amount of Spaghetti worms and Bristle Worms. They both like deeper beds, but will do fine w/o.

The Southdown sand is a bit more complicated. Sometimes they have it around here. Long Story short, it's carribean beach sand shipped up here for the kiddie's Sandboxes in their backyards... cost's about 3 bucks a bag and is even better than CarribSea (that last point is still debateable by some). It's seasonal at best, and hard to find, so if you get it, you're lucky. Otherwise, you can just buy some CarribSea oolithic and do the same thing at 20 bucks a bag.

Steve and Kevin,
Chase Pitkin sells inexpensive tropical play sand as well. It's not Southdown brand, but it's steril tropical sand just the same. I can't remember the brand. I bought some last spring. It may be a seasonal item since they carry it primarily for sand boxes.

Craig this sand your talking about is not the same sand. The stuff your talking about has a silica base. Which isn't any good for a reef.

You might think about changing your sand. It could be the reason why you keep getting hair algae.

cperson

Zmann,

I found the bag of sand, it's Yardright brand. Doesn't say what is made out of, just says it's sterilized tropical sand. Maybe I should not use it anymore. How do you know about this sand?

BTW, I got a handle on the hair algae early December. Just had to cycle through it, which took about 4 months in my case.

Hey all.

New member, but not a new reefer here.

I am looking for some additional lighting for my 75 gallon tank. Right now I'm on the low side with 220 watts. If anyone has an old NO or VHO unit floating around that can manage 2x 4' bulbs, let me know how much you want for it.

I'm also looking for a little phytoplankton starter (and any other culture type starter) that's around...though right now I'm only ready for the phyto type.

After I get the phyto-pharm going, I'll be more than happy to supply some stuff as needed.

If anyone has some loaded live sand (worms, copes, etc...) that I can buy, that'd be great. I have about 3 to 5 lbs of TPS (remains of a bag) that I can give back to fill in where you take from. ;)

Right now, I don't have much else to trade except some basic polyps (and LOTS of them....). You can see them here: http://www.webim-inc.com/aquarium looking at either of the 2 sets of dates (the 12/2/2001 date has full tank, the 2/10/2001 has half tank pics).

If I can get the phyto going enough to feed what appears to be a sponge, then I may have some of that to trade too. It's pink in color and has a branching structure. I don't know if I can get a pic of it, but I'll see what I can do (lighting is the issue there).

Thanks for any help in this....

Oh God, another Kevin!
AND he's a Geek too! Sheeesshhh... Try to get together over Reefs, and we end up starting a computer club :-)

Just kidding... seems half of us work on vidiot boxes for a living.

If you're looking for 4 foot NO lamps... just get a shop lamp at the Hardware store for 5 bucks and gut it. I've done that before myself, worked fine.

The Phyto's a little harder... I've got DT's Concentrate, which is supposedly "Live" Phyto, but I don't know if you could start a culture off of it, and it's not mono-species, either. I do however have a bottle of phyto food... so if you ever get a culture going, you can have that (I'll never use it again). When I tried culturing, I got my starter discs from Inland Aquatics. They were reasonably priced, and you could get a couple strains of algae too. I'd just go with the DT's tho, if I were you. Get it at Carribean every couple of months, so I don't have to pay shipping. MUCH easier than sterilizing tank water.

I can prolly hook you up with bugs and worms and sand and such as well. How much you looking for?

You might be right shotgun but southdown is the name of the company not just the sand. So unless Craigs sand says Southdown inc. on it I doubt its made by the same company. Another thing, Ive never heard of Yardright brand ever being tested like Southdown has. So where can I find the info you have just given so I can go read it? Is it on this board somewhere?

Hehe....it's the other Kevin again.

Kevin,

For sand, a little bit may go a long way. I just want to get some more going in the tank. I have quite a few worms (mostly bristle) but very few pods of any sort....I think I've seen about 6. :( Whatever you want to bring.....beggers can't be choosers. :)

I didn't want to strip out a shop light since I don't want to fight with splicing wires and the such. I could, I just didn't want to. Also, my wife would rather I not introduce a fire hazard....the flooding hazard is enough for her. :D

If you want to bring some of the DTs, I'll try and jump start it. It would only take one living cell to get going. ;) A combination set (that is sold as a combination set) probably isn't a bad mix...so that's not a concern.

Phytofood? What the heck...if you aren't going to use it. :)

Thanks. Let me know if you want anything....

Hey maybe we should start up the Upstate Geek Society. Control systems, Aqua Cams, etc. etc. Can't join the Upstate Kevin Society though, but feel free to start it.

Jamie and Tim (and whoever else cares),
FYI, the Yardright brand sand is made by Southdown Inc., says so on the bag.

ESV's Kalk at Premium - 20 bucks/4Lbs (http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PA&Product_Code=ESV102&Category_Code=ESV)

Great stuff... been using the same jug for about 5 months now. The drawback I've heard about the pickling lime is it's not ground as fine, and as a result, doesn't dissolve as well (more crap left over on the bottom). I'll admit at pennies per pound it's hard to turn down... but I feel better knowing I'm getting some "Tank Grade" Kalk. It's usually lab grade calcium Hydroxide, so very finely ground with minimal impurities. I don't know what you dose every day, but I top up about 12-15 L'severy day, and it takes a while to work through it.

One of the joys of getting up at 5 every weekday for work. My weekends are longer now, just don't ever ask me to go to a Midnight movie.. I'll never make it.
