Now what did you want to know about Terri? Southdown? :p

I once saw some in Nashua. Norwood, MA also was reported to have some Southdown.

:p

Teri,
I used to get my Southdown at Home Depot in Norwood MA. However I
called there the other day to see if they had any and it appears to be out
of season.
I checked with Home Depot in Somercille MA (just outside of Boston) and
they had 17 bags.

I hear home depot generally gets it in around march. Good find on the somerville store! I know the one, it's right off route 93. Funny, I was there daily while we renovated our kitchen, it never seemed to have any.

There's none at the Southbay Center on the Southie/Roxbury/Dorchester line.

Hi Moe,

Yep - we're in Southern NH, and can't seem to find any Southdown around here. I have had a number of people from the group email me this evening, and offer suggestions of places in MA that might sell it - I'm going to follow up on those tomorrow (thank you everyone!). Unfortunately, most places seem to not carry it until "spring" .
We have a 75g now that I'm converting to an sps tank, as soon as we set up and cycle the new 180g (coming Saturday) and transfer all the current livestock from the 75g to the 180g. We'll be putting live sand beds in both tanks....so we need a *lot*. :-)

Vilas I shouldnt say that I check with the Somerville store. The guy from the Norwood store called em for me. I hope they have sand, cause I am attempting to set up a sea horse tank for my 10 year old Godchild. She wants to be a marine biologist.
She is doing better than I did at her age!...man I think I wanted to be a GI-Joe guy when I was 10!:p

Uh oh.....sounds like I'm going to have to go grab those bags asap!! :-)

Thanks again!

ooooo, wanna set up seahorse tank for me? I'm dying for one, but I'm told that my 55 is far too much (space/money/etc)
How big is your seahorse tank? If you're really out of luck on finding southdown, and have a small tank, I can probably give you some of the 50 pound bag I have. I really don't need all of it.

Its a 44 pentagonal....you know the ones with all the silicone seams. Its a perfect height for a horse tank nice and tall. I think I am more eexcited than my Godchild :)

joe,

is it the same size tank Greg Hiller uses as his seahorse tank?
i think that one in the kitchen was a hex, wasn't it?

Reef Lady,

I usually get mine at the Salem NH Home Depot. Last time I went there they had 3 pallets of the stuff but that was a couple of months ago. Good luck in your search.

I used to have a 60 gallon Hex tank for my horses, but it leaked, got another, leaked. Very bad design by All Glass. Replaced with a 54 corner, much better, but I still double sealed the bottom of the tank myself.

My seahorses are currently in a 37 gallon Oceanic in my kitchen. The seven of them just turned 2 years old. H. barbouri's FWIW.

I go to the Sommerville HD quite often as it's on my way home from work. I've never in several years seen the Southdown sand for sale there, and believe me I've looked. Last time I purchased Southdown was from the Natick store many months ago.

I just called the Everret store at 617-389-2323.

Gave them the SKU 578-819 for Southdown and they have 100 bags according to the computer.

So if you want some call and make them do a physical check to confirm.

Yahooo! Thanks so much, Hartman! I *really* appreciate it - thanks so much for calling them. Sounds like a Saturday morning excursion. Now, just to figure out where Everett is. You'd never know I grew up in MA. :-) Oh wait, I know...near Revere, I think.
Got it. Only about an hour and 15m from here. Cool!
:)

Thank you!

Don't bother with the Everett store. They had 3 pallets of playsand with the right SKU #, but they were the wrong ones. They're made by Quickrete.

Thanks so much to everyone for all their help, suggestions, and phone calls. We went to the Somerville store yesterday (only 1.5 hours) and grabbed the last 10 bags they had.

Thank you!

Sheesh Teri,

10 bags? Hehehe how deep a sand bed are you making? :eek1: ;)

ReefLady

Well...probably only 4", maybe a little more. But, for both a 180g *and* a 75g, at least that was our original plan.

However, those plans changed as of this morning....looks as if we're going to be selling the 75g, and just doing the 180g. I did send Scav a private message and offer him the extra 3-4 bags.

hehe..you guys will be amused at this one. I was at home depot today in somerville, getting things for my kitchen, and thought I'd check to see if there was any left.
I asked the guy in the garden department, and his eyes got big. Apparently, the poor guy is completley baffled as to the sudden demand for southdown. He got 7 or 8 calls about it, and the bags that were there went, as well as a few bags he'd seen lying around elsewhere. He had no idea why people were suddenly so interested in it, and refused to be satisfied with the quikcrete stuff.
heh.
