Scott, did you research this before getting it? Samantha Marie - is this the common name or scientific?
I have found these to be very rewarding specimens to keep, but beware of behavour changes as they grow. Now would be a good time to buy stock in KimberlyClark and later get some ATT.

Congratulations, Phill

Thanks everyone.
Mom and Sam are doing great. They had to do a C-section so Momma is really sore, but she is getting around as well as can be expected.
We thought we did enough research with Joshua Maney (3 yrs) but I find that even though our LBS (local baby store) told us he would be fine for our system, each one is different. Time will only tell.

Congrats! She's absolutely adorable! Watch out though...sometimes, like reef tanks, babies can get addictive. Although usually by the third your completely cured. :D

Best Wishes, for Mom, Samantha Marie, and for Dad. :)

LMAO!! LBS.......man, you gotta be careful of the bad info those lbs's pass out. I had one tell me once that babies could be returned if it didn't work out for us--then when we tried they said they had no room. ;)

As far as we can tell she is nocturnal. She seems to go inactive during the daylight hours only coming awake to feed. She begins her twilight adventures within fifteen minutes after the parents are sleeping and will remain active untill the sun rises. The LBS definately did not tell us about this and we have forgotten if the Josh did this. I guess this how families get more than one fry.
Congrats Coralhound!!
Dark Horge, she seems to be drawn to the dark already. Your reach is long!

The only problem is that by the time you've got their sleep patterns adjusted to yours, you can't sleep until they get in for the night!

Bill, I think I'll start them out with FOWLR tanks first.

JamesB, The truth of your words chills me to the bone!

I think you've got this backwards.

Congratulations. Enjoy the sleep deprivation. We found watching the fish actually calms ours down quite a bit. Now stop reading this and go change a diaper!

One word of warning: Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly if you touch fish food or put your hands in the aquarium. Several months after my baby got a staph infection at age 10 days, I saw a post on reefs.org where like 20 or so people were claiming they got infections from their fish tanks. I don't know how serious a threat this may be, but it never hurts to be careful.

anemone of the state,
Thanks for the heads-up. It's not worth the risk not to just wash your hands.

While on the subject of paranoia, here are two more precautions to take:

1. If you don't have one, install a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter); about $10. This prevents a ground fault electrocution, which accounts for 90% of electricity fatalities.

2. When she starts to walk, install corner cushions on your fish tank stand(s), if applicable. We took our 2 year old the ER one night when he was chasing our dog(as usual) and slipped and fell and his head hit the solid oak corner of the cabinet. It turned out to be nothing serious, but these are the kinds of things that take 10 years off the parent's lives.

In general, if you can conceive of some distaster happening, there is a fair chance it will.

Good luck, and I hope you get some sleep. It is definitely worthwhile, and the best part is it makes the hobby look quite inexpensive.
