View Full Version : My RO/DI Setup

Here are some pics of my RO/DI setup.

The first one is under the sink in the master bath. You can see where I screwed up my first 2 holes. The first one I drilled I hit dead center in a stud!! Second one was too far left. As they say, third times a charm!!

This pic is under the other sink. Here is my storage tank and the hook ups to the supply line and the the icemaker line.

This is my Rubbermaid Brute trashcan. I went with the Brute because it is safety rated for food contact. Only the best for my fishes!! You can see the line coming through from the bathroom. I put a ballvalve on it so that I can shut it off if I desire. I plan on eventually moving my DI portion out here so it's easier to see/work on. I had also given thought to buying an add-on vertical unit. They hold a lot more resin that mine does.

Here is a pic of the float valve at work. As you can see, I've got a long way to go before getting it filled!! I figure it'll probably take a couple of days. I really need a RO pump!!

This pic is a schematic of my set-up. Where the black arrow is pointing, I am thinking of putting a check valve. This way when I'm making DI water, it won't drain the holding tank. That way I'll still have a couple gallons of RO water under pressure for the icemaker/water through the door on my refrigerator.

I am also thinking of putting a check valve on my waste line just up from the saddle valve. That way if my septic or drain ever backs up it won't back into the RO unit.

Let me know what you think!!!

Looks good Gary! I'll have Randy look at this thread tonight when he gets home!

nice, I have my auto top off just going directly into my sump and bypassed the trash can

I'd have to run the line under the house and through the crawl space to do that, although it would be nice.

A couple other things I was thinking of doing was plumbing in an overflow line on the holding container. That way if the valve did stick it wouldn't flood the furnace room, it'd just go down the drain.

Also I was thinking of putting in a small bulkhead. On the inside of the tank I'd have vinyl tubing running down to a pump to pump water out. On the outside I'd have some more vinyl tubing to use to fill my buckets.

But all that will have to wait for another day and another paycheck!!

I think I'm gonna go lay down now and try to get a couple hours sleep before the rugrats get home from school.

Looked at your schematic. Can't put a check valve where you want-you need two way flow here. Check valve on waste line to saddle valve? The saddle valve is on the supply line. Don't worry about the sewer backing up into the RO unit-it already has a check valve for that purpose. This is a manditory feature, or they could not sell it. I'm not crazy about how your waste drain port is before the P-trap though. It should be after and on top of the exit pipe going to the standpipe! I know this is going to be a drag, but, you should replace the P-trap and drill a new hole in the exit pipe. The way you have it, if you P-trap clogs, you will have water overflowing your sink, if the RO route/pressure/check valve allows flow.

I see your concern, but according to the directions on my RO unit it stated to connect the drain before the trap.

Why is 2-way flow required where I want to put the check valve?

I would set it up to allow flow to the tank and GAC filter for the frig, I was just wanting to stop the flow from the tank back to the DI when I'm making water.

I would not drink from it, my understanding if you drink water after DI it is very bad for you body you could get it and redo it to match your needs

there was a thread on RC about that model...a few people like and a few people that dont....if i remember right standard filters dont fit it and they only sell filters by the case. You might want to find that thread on RC. search RO/DI ebay

Personally I like the 6 stage unit. We bought ours a little over a year ago and have been very pleased with it. I think we paid a little over $100.00. Here is the unit we bought.

We went through Filter Direct and got very good customer service.

If you notice the downfall is that the DI stage is fairly small. If you have crappy water that has a higher TDS going into the DI it will exhaust quicker.

That is the only thing I wish was different about mine, a larger DI. But I have considered switching one of my carbon prefilters to a larger vertical DI. having well water I shouldn't need 2 carbon block filters.
