I've been talking to Micki via PM a lot today and thought that I would introduce myself to you all. First, my name is Travis Hobbs and I live in Englewood,OH..just north of Dayton. I have been looking to start a reef of my own and I just got a head start from a guy in the area! Thanks Josh! i pick up his old/my new tank on Saturday. I just have some questions. I am trying to figure out what type of coral that I can grow in this tank after I get it up and going and fell comfortable.

Here are the Specs:

75g aga tank with overflow
8x54w 48" t5 light PSL fixture with legs.
Life reef 125 Sump
Little Giant 4 return pump
Aqua-c ev150 with mag7 return pump
Several powerheads
2-Mag 7
2-Rio 2500

the seller has also give me his sand bed and the water he was using in the tank. Let me know what you guys think the posibilities are. Thanks again.

Travis...

ps- all the crap below this message has changed as far as my tank goes :)

good lighting you can keep LPS but if you never had corals before I would start off with some softs like mushrooms, leathers, zoo's, and polyps Have you ever been to Gerbers Saltwater Warehouse?

Welcome

OK looks like you got some nice stuff.
2 mags are back up pumps or for a closed look i take it.
In my opinion i wouldnt use the rio 2500's on anything you dont want to fail and flood. I have had bad luck with them.

As far as lighting goes. With this being your first reef I would start easy. You have enough light to keep most things. But dont rush in. Need to let your tank get established before you start throwing big money corals in there. Make sure the tank is properly cycled also.

Do you have Live Rock to put in?

What do you want to keep? Its your tank. Some combinations are bad. Wondering anenomes and sps = bad news
sps and mushrooms usually = bad news

Lets here what you think

Good to have you here
Matt

Hey,
I am in Union so I am not to far from you, you can keep softies and some SPS, I have a client with montipora Capriconis under less light and it is growing

Slicktrax
03/09/2005, 08:19 PM
Once you get through your cycle, softies should be good. If you want some green striped mushrooms to get started, let me know. I have some fragged ready to be given away.

PS welcome to the addiction.. I mean hobby.

hey everyone!

Thanks for the info...keep it coming! I'm turning 24 tomorrow and my wife got me a sweet book for this stuff: Aquarium Corals : Selection, Husbandry, and Natural History. It's said to be the best...It may be so good that I wont have to ask these questions all the time...HA

Marinelife: Good to see you live close, we'll have to hook up sometime!

Redpyro: Yeah, i have been to Gerber's a few times...I may be headed there to get some store credit if a cant sell my tank and stand.

KEEP THE INFO COMING!!!!!!!!!

I think everyone is trying to get together Aprill 25. If you can make it will bring you some. If not, let me know when your tank is done cycling and we can work something out.

bigfalcon36
03/09/2005, 08:37 PM
Nice...where does everyone meet at??? I think that the tank will be done cycling pretty quickly because he's giving me his sand and all the water that was in the tank. If I understood him correctly we're going to basically take it down on Saturday when I get there. I'll keep everyone posted...and include pics too. I know everyone like the pics :D

redpyro
03/09/2005, 08:38 PM
yes pics are cooool

if you move it without distubing the sand it will cycle quicly or not at all. When i moved my 55 it didnt recycle because i did not screw up the DSB.

bigfalcon36
03/09/2005, 08:41 PM

redpyro
03/09/2005, 08:43 PM

redpyro
03/09/2005, 08:44 PM
a 75 with sand, not sure your going to be able to do that. Might have to remove some of the sand and recycle the tank. Depends on how much sand i guess and how much water you can get out of it

bigfalcon36

Absint Reefer
03/09/2005, 09:35 PM
I would drain all the water just because take one turn and all the water is going to be on one seel and it could break but if it's only 35min then the sand should be fine just being damp

bigfalcon36
03/09/2005, 09:42 PM
should I place anything over the DSB when putting the water back in the tank?

Absint Reefer
03/09/2005, 09:45 PM
DSB deep sand bed right? If so then pour the water onto the side of the tank or on a rock so the sand dose'nt get stirred up

bigfalcon36
03/09/2005, 09:48 PM
Ok thanks. Also, I was snooping through your gallery and there were some messed up looking fish in there...looked like they were dead...where the Hell did you get them from??

marinelife

75 will be hard to move with a dsb, I had one that I replaced with my 120 and all I had to do was move it out alittle to get the 120 in its place, it was very heavy. I am thinking you will have to remove the sand. I moved the sand from the 75 to the 120 and they cycle was not bad, the fish and inverts all got moved an hour after the sand and they all lived.

Slicktrax
03/09/2005, 09:58 PM
put a trash bag across your sand when you refill. the water will hit the bag and hardly disturb the sand at all.

Absint Reefer
03/09/2005, 10:00 PM
those are some pics I took before I put them into my tank:D

bigfalcon36

bigfalcon, here is a thread I started for my 125 upgrade. Towards the end you can see pictures of how I filled my tank. Like slicktrax said, I used garbage bags. You can see I had NO sand storm at all! Good Luck!

Absint Reefer
03/09/2005, 10:06 PM

Micki

bigfalcon36

Micki

bigfalcon36
03/09/2005, 11:25 PM
hopefully, i dont think I could contribute...maybe just buy some...just be the bottom feeder and clean up the scraps

Micki
03/09/2005, 11:28 PM
Doesn't matter if you can contribute or not as long as you participate in the fun!

redpyro
03/10/2005, 06:49 AM
you guys stay up to late :) i miss all the fun :(

when you readd the water put something over it so not to stir it up, trashbag, a big plate and pour the water on it...trash bag will float around but a plate will remain in the same place so it will not movea round on you...like a big target at the bottom

bigfalcon36
03/10/2005, 08:22 AM

bigfalcon36

hey guys you get first shot at it...I'm trying to get rid of 75g AGA...oak trim & matching stand. Non-drilled tempered bottom. We can work out a resonable price. PM if interested

Travis

redpyro
03/10/2005, 02:45 PM
isnt this the tank the one guy had for you?

ohioreef
03/10/2005, 02:57 PM
I'd been interested if it was drilled or a RR.

redpyro
03/10/2005, 03:01 PM
i'd be interested if it was free..but alass i have no room or money for such things

bigfalcon36
03/10/2005, 03:35 PM
no the one Im gonna get has one overflow...this one doesnt. is there anyplace that trades stuff in other than Gerber's?

Slicktrax
03/10/2005, 04:15 PM
have you put it in the selling or trading forum on RC yet? timing isnt right for me to get another tank right now, otherwise i would be interested

bigfalcon36
03/10/2005, 04:16 PM
Ohio reefer...it would be an easy one to Drill the back of it...just need a dremel or a glass bit.

bigfalcon36
03/10/2005, 04:18 PM
im just trying to get rid of it locally first, just thought to ask you guys. Slicktrax - I could hang on to it for a while if you want it

Slicktrax
03/10/2005, 04:27 PM
dont wait on me, i have house projects that need finishing before i am allowed to expand my tank area

bigfalcon36
03/10/2005, 04:29 PM
ok, just trying to be fair :D Anyone know of a place that trades??? Other than gerber's???

Absint Reefer
03/10/2005, 05:26 PM
could put it in the paper you'll get a lot more for it than if you trade it in
