The kid at the LFS recommended I use a MJ1200 as the return pump in my 5.5g sump. I was hesitant because the box didn't give any specs regarding how high the mj1200 could push water. The rio 800 and the other brands they had all had charts on them showing how the flow fell as the height increased. I'm really concerned because this is my first sump setup, and the overflow I have is way too big for my lil 20g. Its rated for up to 700gph. It will siphon at the speed the return is running, right?

The overflow shouldn't siphon. It will drain as quickly as your pump can push. I wouldn't use a maxijet for a sump return. That's not what they are made for. You might be able to use a small mag drive pump or a rio if you want to risk it.

a MJ isnt supposed to be used as a retturn pump, but there is no reason it couldn't for a small 5g. It wont give you as much flow, because of the head pressure, but still will work

I used to use a Aquaclear 402 and later an 802 for return pumps and they both work great. I don't know if or how well a MJ would work for a return.

the aquarium systems site says the MJ1200 is capable of pushing water 69", or 5'9". I filled the sump, and held the return nozzle over my head (I'm short) and fired up the maxi. It pushed the water, not fast, but it pushed it. I still think I'll look into a mag drive since those are so popular.
