hello all,

Nemo was over last weekend while I was descaling the used berlin that I just bought.
I noticed that they put a 1" acrylic plate int he bottom of the primary riser.
this breaks up the cyclone effect and makes it more effeciant.

I want to try this out on one of my seaclones, but how do I get that 1" riser out of there?

what do you think? It may be the answer!

This tells you how to get the inner tube out: http://www.reefcentral.com/diy/seaclone_modifications.htm

I could not get the tube out, even after trying the methods in the seaclone mods but I cut the tube down with a dremel type tool and it worked. I also heard of the mod you refereed to from Gary at Harbor Aquatics. I was at his location and he showed me the difference between the Berlin with the mod and with out and the difference was night and day.

Once you cut down the Seaclone inner tube cut a piece of acrylic to fit inside the tube and you will see a huge difference. It is a modification that works and should be passed on to all Seaclone users (until they upgrade). Good luck.

Call me stupid, but I'm not sure I'm following/picturing where this piece of acrylic is supposed to go.

Do you just cut a length of acrylic as long as the left over intermediate tube that you cut down (about 3") and narrow enough that it will fit inside the 1" tube?

Canadian,
the berlin's plate is 1" by 1 " it should be enought to disrupt the cyclone.
I hope to try it out next week (at my folks for the holiday). I am not sure that the pliers are going to work.
Il let everyone know how it goes!

So you just stuff this into the intermediate tube effectively cutting it in half length wise I assume? I've already cut down the riser tube on the one I have. Will adding this piece of acrylic presumably eliminate the minimal cyclone effect that I have left? Or is this more effective if done to a riser tube that hasn't been cut?

I realize you haven't actually done this yourself, but as it is, I haven't even seen a Berlin modified like this so I'm not sure how it works.

Do you think the addition of the piece of acrylic will reduce the water flow?

Ok I did the mod. Too early to tell how effective it'll be. Seems to improve contact time though. I cleaned out the whole skimmer when I took it apart to do the mod so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see what kind of skimming it does now.

Canadian,
how is it working out?
the REDSEA is not a modbut actually comes that way the diffusion plate is at the bottom of the riser tube to difuse the bubles at bottom.
from your post am I correct in thinking that you cut 3" off the top of the riser and then glued in a plate bi secting the riser at the top?
thanks for any clarification

CH,

I had previously done the mods outlined on Larry's page. So my riser tube (intermediate tube) is only 3" long. I cut the piece of (roughly 1" x 3/4") acrylic and used it to bisect the tube.

It does increase contact time (though previously cutting the intermediate tube helped tremendously) and pretty much eliminates the small "cyclone/ tornado efffect" that was still left.

All in all it seems to be a pretty good mod.

so did you place the bisecting piece at the top or the bottom of your 3" riser?
did you glue it in?
how did you get your riser out?
TIA

The bisecting piece is toward the top of the tube. All you have to do to take the tube out is fill the skimmer with HOT TAP WATER and then gently move it back and forth and it'll come out no prob.

The bisecting piece isn't glued in. It's rather thin material so it wedged in there nicely.

Well I finially got back the seaclone, but after the fact it too tall for my stand config. Oh welp. I did however worked on the modifactions. But, I could of used this earlyer about the HOT TAP WATER. My center tube decided to break off right at the bottom of the black piece of plastic holding it in. Putting it in a bucket of water and using the included pump i do see that the pump is not very good at sucking the water in. Taking the ventury off the pump speeds up of couse and it fills the skimmer more. I think a wood airstone and an air pump would be called for. The air stone would be placed into the center incomming hole. Mine has this huge reaction chamber now with out that innner tube missing.

I'll stop rambling now ;)
