View Full Version : Drilling glass with cheap hole saw?
I just got the new FAMA magazine. In the DIY article called "For What It's Worth" someone wrote in and said you can drill glass tanks with a carborendum(?) hole saw. These saws are about $5 from Home Depot and are used for drilling holes in ceramic tile, fiberglass, etc. Is this right?I thought you needed a diamond hole saw for glass.Anyone want to experiment?Bob

I may try it, it would cost $20 to drill a hole in a 10g I want to put a bulkhead on. The tank only cost $8. Cost more to drill a hole than to buy a tank.It might be worth the try?
If it works it would be great for making add on refugiums and sumps out of 30 and 40 gal breeder tanks.Good luck and report back if you try it.Bob

The idea sounds intriguing but I think they are underestimating the cost of the hole saw. What size are we talking here? I can't buy a decent regular hole saw for $5, much less a carbide version that will cut tile. At $20 a hole....I think I would pay it.

Larry,
I'm not 100% but I thought I saw a 1-3/4" carbourendum(?) hole saw at Menards (home center) for under $10.BTW I just bought a 2-1/2" carbon steel hole saw blade for $6 at Ace Hardware.I had the arbor so I saved $7 there.I used it to drill 2 holes in the top of the tank for 2 Sea-Swirls.Bob
