First of all. I'm somewhat handy when it comes to DIY, but I don't know much about how a calcium reactor works. Anyway, I ran accross the old U.S. Aquariums hang on skimmer that's collecting dust in my basement yesterday. I thought, maybe I'll just give that to someone who wants to fool with a POS. Then I thought, I wonder if I could somehow make that into a calcium reactor. Any idea?

FOX,

Do you know how a calcium reactor works? If not then that is the first thing that needs to be discussed. I think that once you have the basic idea, then you will be off to a great start. If you are comfortable about how a calcium reactor works, then please give us some more details about the size, shape, and general design of the skimmer (i.e. what do we have to work with)?

FOX,

Thanks for the heads up. I fixed the link. (I had a comma at the end of the URL.) Ooops.

Ignatz,

I understand the basic idea, but I don't have a detailed knowledge of how they work. The skimmer is about 30" tall and I guess about 4" in diameter. Both the inlet and outlet are side by side, approximately 1-2" from the top of the skimmer.

FOX,

Is there anything else inside the skimmer? On the assumption that there is nothing on the inside, you should be able to modify it fairly simply. Start at this URL Aquarium Frontiers, March 1998, Sanjay Joshi DIY instructions for a calcium reactor. (http://www.animalnetwork.com/fish/aqfm/1998/mar/features/2/default.asp) and let me know if you think you can modify these plans to fit your project.

I'll have to take a closer look at it tonight. Not 100% sure there's nothing else inside. I tried the URL and it gave me an error 404 message.
