I also posted this in the Club meeting thread, but if there is anyone out there that isn't attending the meeting and would like to trade a couple cups of sand, and you dont have flatworms or any other infestation. Let me know.

Why not have everybody that is interested contribute a set amount of sand and then someone holds it all in a spare tank for a month or two. That way, any infestations will have run their course and everyone can be sure it is problem free. Then when the time period is over - everyone gets the same amount back that they contributed but now instead of just 1 persons sand they have the biodiversity of X person's sand (X being the number of people that contributed.

Hey, if we're gonna do it that way, I've got a 40 Breeder I'd be willing to set up for this purpose. I'll put a few pieces of rock and Cheato in it with PCs and load the bottom with a brand new bag of Southdown. Whoever donates to it will get double in return, or much more, because I'll likely want to empty the tank when we're finished. 50lbs + donated cups will go a looooong way ;) The tank will use RO/DI and will be fed a few times each week with DT Phyto, MicroVert, and ZooPlex. Cyclopeze if requested. This tank will be isolated from the rest of my own system. If we have enough interest I'll get this tank setup before the end of the month.

No, flatworms are tiny little oval shaped critters that swarm over your rock and corals, smothering them. The fireworms are the long thin worms that tend to come out in the dark and feast on the dead or dying creatures so they don't foul up your water. Fireworms are known better as bristleworms, and I actually try to keep them for their cleanup service.

WHAT IF MY SAND HAS A BIT OF CURSHED DOLOMITE IN IT..? I NEVER DID REMOVE ALL OV IT BEFORE ADDING THE SAND FROM MY OTHER SYSTEM.

Well yeah if we want to do this on a large scale the "holding" tank thing is a great idea if we can get more then 4 people to contribute thier sand.

I'm located in Sheboygan Falls, midway between Green Bay and Milwaukee. I'll be "donating" one precious bag of Southdown to the group if we decide to set up shop at my place.

jmkarcz - is the dolomite the same as crushed coral? I'm not picky about that. I'm gonna be sprinkling some of my old CC around my new tanks myself because I think it looks more reeflike than just sand.

I'd like to sweeten the pot by saying that I'll be ordering various refugium kits from a handful of sites when the weather warms up. That'll be my contribution next month.

I would be interested in doing it also.

I would be interested also. Only one problem. My refugium is brand new and I only have about two cups of sand from a friend's established tank. I would be more than willing to share what I have. I certainly like the idea of the method here. There is another post going on that is doing the same thing, but nation wide! Let me know when, where, and how.

No, I redesigned the stand for my 46BF and purchased a 20g sea clear acrylic aquarium and modified it to be a refugium under my tank. Right now it has about a 6" DSB with now macro algae. Still working on that!

skicaltech
02/17/2005, 10:12 AM
Sorry, I meant "no" macro algae

I should have the 40BR setup around the end of the month. Just need to order an extra heater and a pair of powerheads on next payday.

Skicaltech, I've got a real small amount of Cheato next time I come through the area. I'm practically out right now from recent donations. PM me if you want some.

OK, I should be all set to receive sand samples at the March 20th meeting. I had to set up the 40BR as a holding tank for the next month, though. However, I set up a spare 20L in its stead. I'm doing some heavy rearranging to make room for the 150G that's going in place of my 55, so I' need my larger spare tanks for happy fishies.

Can I get a head count on who's bringing some sand? If I get a large enough response I'll setup a 40G stock tub instead and more base sand. Otherwise there should be more than enough room and faster mixing in the 20L, and I would think it should be ready by the April meeting.

Sounds like a few people need to read the first page of this thread :rolleye1: I'm in Sheboygan Falls. That's why I figured I'd just take up the collections at the meeting. And I've been busier than hell last week, having to shell out $694 to a lawyer for someone trying to screw us over. Had to put off a large tank purchase, which was the worst part of it all :mad2:

I'm all set, got sand, rock and bacteria in the tank without any lighting right now. All I need now are donations containing the finest micro critters you can find :D Gonna try it out with rocks one one side and lit macros on the other side under a 75W lamp mentioned in Melev's Fuge Bulb thread. I've got a handful of my own mysis and tubeworms in right now.

Hey were you at the meeting schmev?

Schmev
03/20/2005, 05:00 PM
Yeah, I was the one who brought in the IO bucket with the pair of Tomato Clowns and a Hawkfish. I had mentioned to a few after the "sermon" about live sand but no one seemed interested. I probably didn't ask the right people

I know at the WRS meetings we often have nametag stickers and a sharpie for everyone, so it's easier to find people you haven't yet met. I'm gonna post that idea in the club thread.

Jeremy- sorry to hear you weren't able to get the big tank.

I'm in on the nationwide sand swap- I will be happy to donate a cup to the Wisconsin Sand Swap, but my visiting sand is still out and won't be back for a few more weeks.

How long are you planning on taking sand contributions?
