Do any of you have blue line clowns? AKA amphiprion chrysogaster. This species is more commonly yellow and black, but this breed has VERY blue lines. Beautiful... Do you know how much these guys would cost? Their host anemone? Any other info?

May be known as AMPHIPRION CHRYSOPTERUS. May be known as Mauritian Clown. Confusing, I'm hooked though...http://pw1.netcom.com/~hearst/Photos/main4/image4/anemonefish.htm

I'm getting prices that are ~$30 to $1000+.
So much different information...

*Thinking to myself*
I think I've found it!

Go to prints.
Go to Anemonefishes and Anemones.
Enlarge, look at B-2, or 2-B (like in battleship).
The best pic I've found is in the globe and mail, maybe I'll scan it.

Another pic! This is the one that sparked my interest. I saw it in the Globe and Mail. That is the fish of my dreams...If you could ID it I would be grateful. It seems like there could be 3-4 species it could be...

The species you are interested in is Amphiprion chrysopterus, also called the orange-finned clown or blue-striped clown. Another close specie is the Madagascar clownfish, A. latifasciatus. The Mauritian clown, A. chrysogaster, is a fairly different looking clown.

I agree with you that A. chrysopterus is one of the nicest clowns. It is also one of the most difficult to aquire in a healthy condition, and to keep it healthy. Do a search in this forum on chrysopterus for some further info.

Unfortunately I have heard the same things as Dan. As a result of these recommendations I have decided to avoid it eventhough it is one of the nicest clowns.

Thank you...I couldn't decide if it was amphiprion chrysogaster or amphiprion chrysopterus.

The last time I saw Amphiprion chrysogaster available in the U.S. they were retailing for $750.00 each. There are not many folks collecting in the Mauritius and they are rare at RĂ©union Island. Beware of certain on-line retailers claiming to have chrysogaster. You'll wind up paying $50.00 for a couple of clarkii clowns. Chrysopterus on the other hand is obtainable with a little patience. Flying Fish has them from time to time and I should have a couple of tank raised batches ready in late May early June. If you feel the need to do an anemone A. chrysopterus is found in Stichodactyla mertensii, Heteractis crispa, Entacmaea quadricolor, Heteractis aurora, and Stichodactyla haddoni. I've had them use a Condylactis gigantea, but they would never sleep in it. I guess they didn't trust it or something.

Sounds good. That would explain the variation it prices. My Canadian LFS has one for $1000, so that seems like a great price compared to the $750 U.S.
