i know its supposed to be low, but how low.
i was thinking maybe 4 40watt NOs...... or i could go even less.

Lightings not a big deal with octos. I just wouldn't recommend MH lights. On a 55, standard florescent lights are fine. If its a day active octo, it will be used to light. If its a night species you won't see it till the lights go out any way. Lighting just sets a dawn and dusk mode for the octo and helps you see. I use 60 watts on my 30. I know people that use a standard shop light.
