The original outline included much more than kalkwasser, but I'll admit that I should have re-oriented the outline. Kalkwasser turned out to be a subject in itself thanks to some very good questions, and some excellent input from all members who attended. I'd like to add that I really enjoyed the conversational format.
I only wished that we had swapped test kits so that other users could draw conclusions from the ease of use of various kits.
Moving on...
Based on my limited chemistry knowledge, I referenced some articles repeatedly in an effort to avoid oversimplifying some defintintions. I also called on a number of conclusions to different tests performed, evident in similar articles. My understanding of alkalinity is limited to remembering where I can find the articles that support my opinions [opinions that I've refined based on the same articles]. :D
That being mentioned, here's the thread where many of these articles stem from:
Randy Holmes-Farley's greatest hits (http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=102605)
And here's the various articles:

What is Alkalinity

The Self Purification of Limewater (Kalkwasser)

The Degradation of Limewater (Kalkwasser) in Air

Limewater, Acetic Acid and Sand Clumping

Expanding the Limits of Limewater: Adding Organic Carbon Sources (vinegar)

Limits To Limewater...Revisited
http://web.archive.org/web/20030618...bio/default.asp
Also, I noticed today that there is an excellent new article in this month's online magazine Reefkeeping (there is a button on the top of the forum adjacent to the search button). This article addressed everything and much, much more that we discussed yesterday. I wish I had read it first.
What your Grandmother never told you about lime (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-01/rhf/index.htm)
(keeping in mind the data that Denise brought to the meeting about the pickling lime sample)
That's it. If you only read one article, I would suggest the last one (What your Grandmother never told you...) it really seems to address everything that I was trying to regurgitate yesterday. ;)

BTW, thanks to Denise for the frag, and Jason for the shrimp eggs. My fish really gobbled up the small amount that I fed them. They may sink, but not fast enough for the little monsters in my tank. I will definately make the effort to find more.
