Hi Randy,

I just read your article on Lime (Kalk) and I was curious as to which one you prefer to use in your tank. I know alot of people including myself have used Mrs. Wages. But wanted to hear which one you use. Lab grade or food grade.

Thanks:)

I use food grade quicklime from the Mississippi Lime company. Some local folks organized a group buy through an LFS a few years ago, and I bought it then.

Randy, is this what I am looking for as far as for dosing kalkwasser?

CODEX HYDRATED LIME (CODEX HL)

Mississippi Lime Codex Hydrated Lime is a high purity calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 which meets or exceeds Food Chemical Codex specifications. Food processing chemists have specified Mississippi Lime for more than 40 years. With ultra low lead (less than 0.1 ppm), it is one of the lowest lead high calcium hydrates available for your Food Chemical Codex applications.

Randy, any reply as to the above? Thanks.

That is a fine product to use, yes. I actually use quicklime, but hydrated lime is just as good.

I am planning on putting the lime in a couple of empty 200 gallon IO salt buckets. Should that be sufficient enough to keep the powder from mixing with CO2 from the air and making it unusable? Thanks again.

That's what I store mine in. Some CO2 will enter and degrade it a bit, but when you have 50 pounds, who cares? :D

50lbs! Wow.

I pay $3.85 per pound of Mrs. Wages. I think Kent Marine charges ~ $25 per pound.

A pound lasts me a few months, let's say 3 months. So 50 pounds would last me over 12 years!!!!

That's what I call buying in bulk.

When Greg Hiller organized a group buy a number of years ago, I bought 2x50 pound bags of quicklime for, IIRC, less than $0.50 per pound. I'm still working through the first bag. :)
