I know this is a little off topic but I could not resist. My father is a very accomplished reef keeper-- one of the best I've known. However, keeping a saltwater reef was way too easy for him and he needed a challange. He needed something that was a huge PITA, he needed something that most of us would consider masochistic. He needed to subject himself to a ridiculous amount of tank maintenance for a small return with fish that would rather hide from you then display their beauty and die quickly if they feel too stressed. (and Ron thinks a blue hippo tang is a big deal!!). My father now keeps discus!! Blasphemy!!! Heracy!!! But I have to admit, he sure does have a wet thumb! There were eggs on the the filter uptube when I took these photos so there is spawning going on.

My dad seems to think he has abandoned reefing. He thinks he is safe. I am going to sucker him into attending a reef meeting. I am counting on you all to make him realize that his talents are best used in reefing.
Please look at his 20 gallon reef at the pet shop. Only a couple photos exist. I waited until he went deerhunting and converted his 20 into a salty. After that it was only a matter of minutes until he began buying LR and lighting etc. It wont take long to get him back into the fold!!!
Fear not however! The LR ad corals and fish he had in his tank went into my 75 gallon!!
I know several of you have clones of his HUGE leather coral. It started out as a small leather about 4 inches in diameter and it grew to about 24 inches while he had it. This man is dangerous with a reef! His stuff grows like it is on sterroids!!!!!!!!!! He has a gift! We need him. Period. I snipped pieces of his giant leather over a period of months so he wouldn't notice. Let us gang up on him and make him grow corals for us! I kid you not, he has a gift. I "get away" with stuff. He gets away with stuff and achieves ridiculous growth rates!!!!! We need to pull him away from discus and use him for farming!
I can be a little arrogant at times but I must bow down when I see a superior force. My dad is an aquatic gardener and I do not know how he does it, but he does. My father is a reef freak. I turned his freshie into a salty and he, without any experience, jumped into it and was a raging success. He is just instinctive-- an animal! It pains me to see him turn his back on reefing because he can do stuff I simply can not.
I'm telling you guys he is amazing because he has no idea what he is doing but he does it anyway. At the next meeting, swamp him and make him farm for us!!!!
He is one of those people who can do a massive water change without dechlorination, with no concern for specific gravity, pH, etc and have no ill effects. I love my dad and I envy his abilities but boy does it pizz me off that he can do these things with a reef and instead chooses to raise DISCUSS!!!! AAAARRRGGGGHHG!!!
