Why not, we don't have a thread of these guy's yet, they don't get nearly enough attention, and I took some pics of mine last night! What better reason to share?

Neat color.

And for those of us who don't know enough about these ... a brief description of how you care for it and find this success?

Sweepers, no sweepers, agressive/not?

Just trolling for information as I'll be distracted by the pictures soon I bet ... and will have to research it anyway after you guys make me have to have one ;)

I keep my Echino's on the sandbed. They get strong lighting and good flow down there. I've seen mine w/ sweepers several inches long, so I like to give them a little breathing room. No other special care. Grow fast once colony gets large enough. Hard to frag, but otherwise very nice corals. Get along well in mixed tanks, and tolerate a range of conditions.

Thank you ... just wanted to know before the eye candy takes over.

How I love these more `unusual' corals ... must be something about the keepers :)

LOL, was thinking the same thing! You know, you could have these corals too if you'd ship (well, not the red, that's still too small to frag ;) ). Closest I come to you is the MMC in Ann Arbor, MI. The pink one and this one I got from RandyO (local hobbiest). The red one I got from Dellrio (out-of-state hobbiest).

Green and Yellow:

.... And those are the only 3 I have, so you're done hearing from me on the matter! :D

I'm thinking when the birds come back here and the flowers bloom again, FedEx can come knockin' :)

Reef Santa just brought me two interesting Monti's, none of these gems yet ....

Hi

is this one of the echinophyllia??:D

Always thought they look great in tanks, but takes up too much space:p

I'm with you Mark. Gotta revive this thread April-May-ish. ;)

Sure looks like one to me DeepBlue. Although there are a few other genera of corals that look similar (I want to say Oxypora?). The mounded/exsert coralites are an identifying trait.

Hmmm, that red one look as though it needs a fragging. :D

I have this green one, not too spectacular but I like it.

Nice Flanders. Does it have blue colored eye's? Where'd you get that? You might have to put me down for a frag of that.

Mac, it doesn't have blue colored eyes, but it is getting more colorful as it grows. I doubt it'll get any blue though.

I got it from TRS, I think it's the same as the green one Tom has on the sand in the 180 display. It is a darker green than most that I've seen. You're welcome to a frag if you don't have this one already, I'd trade it for any of yours.

Nah, thanks, I know where Tom got the green one.... ;)
Ultimately it's Randy's green Echinophyllia, forget where he got it from (might have come in through the shop). There's a long list for the red, but my pink's due to be fragged again soon...

Hmmm. I thought it was different from Randy's but I'm probably mistaken.

Hey guys. The green Echino Tom has is the same as mine. It looks a little different in everyone's tank. It sometimes gets yellow in the body for me. You can see it a little in Kevin's photo above.
And it's definitely the fastest growing Echinophyllia I have.

It's funny, looking at the close up pics of some of these, it's hard to believe they're the same species in some cases. I've no doubt we're probably dealing w/ at least 2 different one's (The pink/green one I think is different from the Green and the Red I've got).

Here's one that is new to the Rochester crew:

http://www.frontiernet.net/~sschafer/Images/echinophyllia_new.jpg

It is more pinkish now . . . Will be interesting to see what color it turns under different lighting. So far I've only fragged it for Downset.

That could be. One thing for sure, is that they are closely related. Otherwise, when they touched each other, there would be aggression going on. These guys get along nicely. More than once have I had freshly cut frags of different colors try to attach to each other. I wish I had not separated them. That would have been a cool experiment.

Here are a couple shots I took tonight.

Notice the flesh touching each other. Any other coral, and the white stringy filaments would be out and attacking.

Wow. Great shots Randy, thanks for sharing. Yeah, I'd have to agree w/ you... there would definitely be aggression going on under normal circumstances. I'm surprised to see that, even just from an individual standpoint... you'd think each colony would start to try to protect it's real estate?
Well, I think I need to do some re-arranging on the sandbed to make more room for Steve's Echino. :)

If it is an Echino, you'll know if you let them touch. I had a purple one I though was echino. It touched the pink Echino overnight, and got beat up. I couldn't believe how much the pink stung the purple.
So, when in doubt, let them touch. :)

LOL! Yeah, but it's finding out the hard way I'd like to avoid! :) Did that one the hard way w/ Echinopora's and Echinophyllia (and yes, that pink/green one is a nasty bugger, ain't she?)

It's good Jeremy. It's growing. I had it in too much light at first, and it was trying to grown down, and under itself. Now that it's in lower light, it's plating a little more. Mainly green around the edges though. I like it a lot.
