I found this algea growing on the rocks about a month ago:

I have been told in other forums that it's caulerpa recemosa (grape caulerpa) I've tried harvesting it, but it is pretty firmly attached to the live rock. It's growing fairly rapidly, so I'm worried it's going to overtake the tank.

Any of you ever had it before? What is the best way to control it? Should I try a tang or a foxface to see if it'll eat it?

My powder blue chows the stuff, give a tang a try.

From the pics, it looks like halimedia to me.

Don't get a tang from the dis(advantage). I got a Kole (one of the best choices for a smaller tank), and it croaked after a couple of days.

No, I wouldn't buy a fish from the diss unless it's been there for a month or more. Usually all the good fish don't last that long because of all the unsuspecting and uneducated marine aquarists say... OH WOW! LOOK AT THAT COOL FISH! LET'S GET HIM!

When in a perfect fish store world, there would be a quarantine setup out back where nobody can purchase fish, they run traces of copper, and don't put sick fish in their displays.

looks like culurpa. how's your alk and po4 levels.
I added a phosphate reactor and pretty much wiped out my grape culurpa outbreak/problem.
From what i know, this macro algae doesn't play nice with sps. softies and lps are more tollerant to it. good luck

Alk is fine... Dunno what my phosphates are. I guess I better check.

Are they little balls like grape calurpa or do they look like little flat discs almost like little thumb tacks. If they are little flat discs then it's halimedia.

Well they start out looking like little bulbs, but then they kinda flatten out to look like thumb takes. Almost like they're blooming.

grape calurpa is def. round balls. I looked through mine and I don't see a single one that is flat disc shaped.

Here's a good link:

Kole tangs are bristled anyway... I wouldn't want a bristle-toothed/mouthed tang.

My best bet would be a yellow/purple/powder blue or brown/etc.
