I purchased an open brain and I am not sure which one I have? I mounted it to a rock, but have read they should be placed on the sand. I am not sure which I have, the LFS did not tell me nor I don't think they could. Could someone post pics of both so I could look and identify which I have. It is round not folded, green with touches of pink about 4 inches across. It looks like it may have been broken off rock the bottom of it was kind of like a cone. I am not sure the pics might help thanks!!

Do a search for Scolymia or Cynarina, and see if it looks like either of those. Particularly because you mentioned a cone-shaped base.

As a general rule, look at the bottom of the coral. Away from its tissue area. If the surface is broken or jagged it was once attached to the reef. If the surface is smooth or conelike then put it on the sand. It is very important you get this correct because it will effect the corals overall health.
