Greetings!
I purchased a red open brain a couple of days ago from LFS. I place it on live rock where it would not contact any of the rock when extended. Everything was fine the first 24hrs, then I started to notice some of the skeleton poking through. I have 440watts of VHO lighting, which is far more than LFS. All of my tank parameters are fine. My temp does go as high as 82 degrees but my green brain has never had a problem. Is my new favorite piece a goner or is their a chance it will recover.

Trachyphyllia(open brain) are usually collected from deeper/turbid waters on the sand bottom. Therefore, light requirements aren't that great and placement on the SB is the idea place for it.Reportedly, the red ones require less light than the green morphs.I would remove it to the SB possibly under an overhang and feed it daily until the tissue re-grows over the exposed skeleton. With good care and water quality,it should make a recovery.

It can recover, but it really should be down on the sand.
