I was wearing a white shirt while taking the photos, sothey were a little bit spooked. They really don't like it when I take pics from the end of the tank.

Everyone has such nice pictures. I sure could use some lessons on picture taking too. I've tried a few with my digital camera but so far, nothing looks too good.

Well spotfin what kind of camera are you using ? Does it have a macro setting and a mode for custom setting the shutter speed and aperture values?

Jason

Sounds like a good topic for an upcoming meeting.

But here's a tip for now: Take lots of pictures. I only keep about 1 out of 10 pics.

Our camera is old too. I bought it for my wife about 4 years ago. It's like a poleroid compared to what's out these days. I think we need to upgrade soon. Personally, I think a digital camera is necessary equipment for the reefkeeper. It makes asking difficult questions (Id's on corals/pests) much easier, and it allows you to track your tank's progress.

Thanks Jay! I have a Kodak digital camera. It has a macro setting and a manual setting to adjust different stuff. I will read through the thread you posted above.
Yes Rob, I think it would make a great topic for a meeting too. Good idea!

What kodak do you have jason? They are nice cameras. I have a easy share CX6200 and it took pretty good pics for a 2.0 MP camera with no manual modes.

Hi Jay,
my camera is the Kodak Easyshare DX6340. Just got it this summer and still haven't figured out all the things it can do. Have taken some great close-up shots of flowers and insects, but so far the aquarium pics haven't been too good. I think a tripod would be a good place to start....

A general tip: for a digital camera that is fairly elementary, look for a "close up" setting (typically there will be an icon for this, like a flower for close up, and mountains for distance). Also in most cases, turn off the flash. The tank lights are typically enough and give a lighting that looks more true.

thats a good tip for sure......I do the same.....I need to take my time more when taking the pics and I need to invest in a tripod as well....

hi DOGG !!

A macro setting is a plus but a manual setting is better.

The DX6340 is a nice camera jason. There should be a moded on the top dial that is a M..you might have to read through your manual to find what mode is the setting for manual shutter speed and aperture setting. To start if you have 14-20k Mh on your tank you will want to use a setting 1/60(shutter) with a aperture of 2.8 using the flash along with this setting will give a more natural color on the photo. If your lights are a briter like 10k then a higher shutter will darken the photo and ajustment of the aperture will focus the photo.

Most of my close ups are taken with a setting of 1/60 2.8-3.1.

A tri-pod is the only way to take good quality photos any movment of the camera (shaking etc...) causes the camera to become unfocused and constantly auto focus.
