Anyone know the lucky recipient of the $800 alleged acan lord on ebay? I wonder if it's the same person who bought the $600 dollar colony of PPE...hehe

seems like a touch of madness mixed with a dash of rarity to me. A delicious cocktail.....for the seller :D

Some guy got $800 for his acan lord on ebay.

I don't know about sucker or not guys....the seller said that it has about 20 to 30 polyps so it comes out to about $50 per polyp max. If it really has 30 polyps then the price per polyp is even cheaper. Some where less than $30 per polyp for solid red acan? That's a darn good deal to me....

The buyer may be pooling with few others and they are paying way less for what some of us are paying out there...see who's the sucker(s) now?.....:)

va_reefman bought it. J/K. Like reefman said, someone may have actually got a good deal if they want to divide it up. Or, if you had the money to spend, wouldn't you do whatever you could to have the nicest looking corals in your tank. Yes, some people go nuts and spend way more than they should for corals on ebay, but then again if you had the money....

To be honest with with you all...I was bidding on it for me and my budy but I stop at 700. In my eyes, that's a good bargain for us. More than that would be just market price for me(since I have plenty already) but for some it still a good deal.

Nothing sucker involved, it looked closer to 20 than 30 heads to me. I just wasn't impressed with the coloration (I have one just like it) Now that pink/green lord was something to drool about :p

I dont think it was a rip off at all. After all, who is to say its a rip off? Its not like you go to Walmart, and pic up a 20-30 head lord for $40.00, then all of a sudden the same one just sold on ebay for 780.00. A coral is worth what someone will pay for it.

I have spent more then that on colonies before, and am/will do it again if I see something I want.

I wonder how long the acan fad will last? A year down the road when the market is flooded with them,I wonder what someone will think when they spent 800 bucks on something that is now 49.99 and a dime a dozen. It happens with every tred coral it seems
Erik

mane3215

These corals will never have "flooded the market". As you can find in other threads, these corals come in under completely different circumstances then the others. They are "mistakenly" brought in.

If, through propagation they are more common then today, it will only be a few morphs that everyone who has one has now such as Randy's red/gray. The very colorful ones will never be common, unless cities, fish and wildlife, and other countries change there policies, and thats not going to happen.

Kreeger1
11/05/2004, 01:01 PM
did not know that, is there a ban on import or collection of these?
Erik

A colorful morph of any coral species will always demand a high price even though their cousins are abundant ..For example, while common Rics are now flooded in the reef market and selling at 8-12 bucks a pop, it is still quite hard now to find a Hot Pink Ric available ...Most of these colorful Yuma Rics are sold at 80-100 bucks each though..

You tell them Chris:D

It's all about getting your foot in the door. The guy may have paid $800 for that colony but at $100 a polyp he/she could easily make $2k. If I had the $$$$ I would fork it out no problem. That could wind up being the best $800 investment that person has ever made!!!!

Yes, these corals are illegal to bring into the US mostly because the countries they are collected in have bans on selling or exporting any type of stony corals.

pshhh I wish I could afford a $800 coral. With the Divorce expenses I would have it would be a $5k coral.

I have seen several people snatch them up for a $100 per polyp. Not me though I'm too PO!

which ones were being snatched up for $100 per polyp?

Sorry can't remember ( short term memory loss LOL) It was when the whole Acan craze blew up and everyone first started buying them them. Wasn't Berlinmethod.com selling them for $100 per polyp??

MarLooney
11/05/2004, 05:42 PM
yes, and he's the only one i know of. also his were color combos that were the only ones in the US. the one on Ebay is a pretty common color... as if you can call any Acan common... but it's nowhere near $100/polyp. frags of the one that just sold on Ebay could get $50/polyp... i wouldn't think much higher than that.

Jus Reefin
11/05/2004, 05:45 PM
Even at $50 you could make your money back and still have a few frags to grow out. One of these days I will have the $$$$ to fork out. Until then I will trade trade trade!!!

mane3215
11/05/2004, 05:46 PM
I think you could get more then that. Biggun was selling his for 75 a head if you got a 1-2 polyp frag, and 50 a head if you got a 4-6 polyp frag. The demand is there, you just ask the price.

kevin's Acan is teal & red, w/ mostly teal. that's why he was able to charge so much. i'd probably go $100 a head on my lord... but not on a red like the one sold on Ebay.

I guess I'm odd I don't see the hoopla over these corals. Oh well to each's own I guess.
Don't get me wrong there nice but the amount of money for one head frag I could get 10 acro frags for. I'll wait they'll come down after the crazy dies like everything does. People will grow them, trade them then they won't be as rare as they are now. No flame, just my experience in my years of this hobbie
All corals have a peak in price then come down as more and more people get them

The crazy ones will never come down. I very strongly believe that. They are IMPOSSIBLE to get here, so when they are here, its on big time...ppl will fight over polyps.

if you get one you'll see what all the hoopla is about. not only are they rare and colorful but they're about as hardy as shrooms!... and they grow faster than almost any other LPS in my experience. Acans retail about $50/polyp. where the hell are you buying acro frags $5 each? people growing and trading doesn't bring the price down any. that means the only ppl getting Acans are ppl who already have Acans. it is very rare that Acans are traded for other corals. you're right in some respects though. they are a fad coral and many people trying to get 'em just want what's "in" right now. i don't think the price will go down much. but when something new comes along the fame of Acans will start to fade for sure.

Jus Reefin
11/05/2004, 06:13 PM
I agree with Chris. Also most Acro's are a dime a dozen and you can't turn a 1" acro frag into a 12" colony in a matter of months like you can with acan's. If they do ever flood the market it would take YEARS

so there fast growers, I've always experienced slower grow rates from lps. There sounding more interesting :)
the deals of frags are from a rc sponser which is also a local guy for me. he does the 10 for 100 bucks sometimes.
www.coraldynamics.com
Ohio has a large group of coral traders I've been trading frags for around 3-4 years now with a small group of people. Maybe I can talk a group buy and frag it up to lower the price humm

I feel the same but these corals are mistakenly being brought over here. There are strict laws with these corals and only a handful of people have them. I don't see it being a fad and if people are making a profit out of propagating, then good for them, it beats getting them out of the ocean!!!
