I'm reasearching right now to start up a salt tank 75g Fowlr when I get back from christmas break. And as I go long I'm picking up things that I'll need for start up. (i.e. Test kits, salt, bulbs) well I've been looking for Sand, (southdown) and I can't find it. I do a decent amount of traveling and haven't seen any do you guys know of any stores that have any around here. Or, from here to Erie cuz I do that trip pretty reguarlly too. Thanks- Ryan

I bought some a few months ago from the Home Depot in Bridgewater New Jersey...... Honestly I think sand is seasonal.... You have better chances of purchasing in the spring and summer..... Do a search on Southdown in Ask Dr Ron Forum..... I remember seeing other inexpensive alternatives to Southdown suggested in his threads......

These days it's hard to find Southdown in certain parts of the country.....:D

Most of the Home Depot's in the Pittsburgh area have changed vendors and switched to this Desert brand sand which is silica. I have not been able to find any for the last 6 months or so.

Is there another type of sand that can be used that is readily available? I am looking for 60-90 pounds also....

Most of the brands you find at local fish stores are fine as long as it is a fine grade of aragonite sand. ESV, CaribSea, and World Wide Imports are all available locally. It is just considerably more expensive than Southdown.
