Hi, I am new to this area, but plan on reading a lot more of it.

Well here is mine. It had some die off, but after being at the LFS for over four months we seen it for the first time. So they gave us a discount on it. We have had it for 2 months now and have seen growth so we feel it has stopped dying.

I would like to see other peoples.:)

Mine only got fuzzy while it was aclimating to my lights. Sorry no pic, my digicam charger is lost. Mine is small, I got it from Dr Mac, from his nano coral selection for $25, and it is a GREAT piece.

there is a pic of mine in my gallery but its jpeg and i cant figure out how to post it. I got it at the LFS for $6 though 2 months ago and when i got it, it was almost completely bleached white and had hardly any green in it at all, but looks really good now compared to how it used to

Narkon
10/25/2004, 12:18 AM
I like both of those, really nice.

jbt123, did you frag yours once? Just that square hole reason I ask.

I am borrowing a digicam tomorrow (today already), and I will post pics of mine when I get home later. I love the thing, got it from Dr. Mac from his nano coral selection. He came to a reef club meeting, and I was lucky to get it for $25.

Here's mine, I got a yellow finger leather and it was mounted to this "dead" coral. there was NO visable skeleton and it ws in my sump, a few weeks later I notices a little pink flesh on it , that was last Nov. It is blue/purple and "teal/greenish" in the valleys. It was my first CPR!
and one of my fav's now

wow, that's the nicest "dead" coral score I have seen!!!! Props to you; I never give up on my lps, they seem to have a talent for returning from the brink.

10/25/2004, 09:11 PM
Narkon, nope i never fraged it, thats just one of the scars that is still healing from when i got it. Yeah i love LPS and they really do have a nack for comming back from the dead I just posted a pick in my gallery of a Red Open Brain i got from the clearance tank at the LFS also, for $20, when i got it a month and a half ago it was half way bleached and the skeloton was showing all around the outside and poking through the mouth area, you can still see a whitish patch on the top center that is almost gone now, i just bought another button coral for $7 a week ago that im tryin to see if i can bring back now

That is a beautiful piece.I've seen blue morphs in books.Have you
tried to ID it?.From the pic,it doesn't look like Platygyra(maze brain). Is the tissue real prominent? Are there any pieces of the skeleton/corallites visible?

Jus Reefin
11/04/2004, 03:00 PM
TYPO, That blue is off da hook. I'll have to get a pic of mine. It is a small one but nice red/green/brown color

Typo
11/06/2004, 01:44 AM
i identified that brain as a platygrya sp.using Veron's Corals of the World, i just forgot which exact species. unfortunately i sold that peice to the fish store i used to work for and it now resides in their showtank. no it is not "that" blue. the ridges are blue but the valleys are blueish/greenish.

i forgot to mention, it turned that color in my tank.

the picture below is a little better idea of what it looks like.

Typo- the coral in your pics looks like Oulophyllia. ;)

davejnz
11/12/2004, 11:31 PM
It does have the sloped valleys like Oulophyllia but i dont think his are as pronounced, its tough to say,I have a sp. of Faviid that looks very similiar(except its green)and i've had a tough time trying to ID.The ceriod/slightly meandroid sp. of Platygyra can be hard to distinguish from other Faviids for me.No way to really tell without corallite skeletal examination. How is your tissue expansion with this coral?Does it swell up?

it swells up at night with sweeper tentacles.

when i first got it a little tissue was eposed and i identified it as a platygyra sp.. it is not Oulophyllia, its valleys are not that deep.

My Oulophyllia would do this. But so does Platygyra. I still believe it's Oulophyllia.
Nice maze, mane. What is it?
Here's two pics of one of my Faviids. First pic with actinic light only, second under actinics and halides. Why anyone would not want to run actinics is a mystery to me. It's like you get two corals for the price of one.

Hehe, yeah this buddy really took care of me. I got a gift package of a large amount of very rare corals =).

As far as I know the one above is just a maze brain, unless of course there are 20 different types =), in which case, I am not sure which.

Beer isnt that bad a thing hehe.

Gary Majchrzak
11/14/2004, 06:51 PM
You're right- beer isn't that bad a thing. It's just that it's pretty common around here.
Here's another weird "maze brain" . I have no idea what it is:

The valleys are teal color. Alot more swollen on normal bases compared to my green maze.

Mane that is a great peice, and when you are ready to frag me a 1" square of it, pm me so I can send you my address. I would say with a purchase of an acan frag, but don't see that happening now, budget gets in the way.

We seen what looked like a purple colored brain at an LFS, but they wanted about 15$ more than we were willing to pay for it.

Gary Majchrzak - that looks almost like a pic of a coral Eric B. has in his book about 3 pages before they platygyas. Think he put it as uncommon to appear in LFSs.

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/518/7144127_2703_3_.jpg

does the tissue on each mouth connect or does each mouth have its own tissue? it looks like the tissue doesn't connect over the ridges and that is exactly how mine is.

Gary:

Yours look very nice. It almost looks like an australogyra, but I've never seen those with much of any color to them.

I had two of these guys. They are pretty cool. The ones I had had some huge polyps/sweepers. They had a pretty drastic reaction to feeding in the tank. The moment fish food would hit the water, you could set a clock to it and it would take them 35 seconds to look like a chia pet even if the food was in the opposite side fo the tank.

This is a piece that came from the monster size one that resides in the coral of the pacific tank at the Baltimore Aquarium. The fastest growing coral I have seen to date. You could put a chair in front of it and see it grow right before your eyes. Huge sweepers too. This one had a tendency to plate out more than turn into a ball. Then aain, it was on the sand.

Wow, nice you guys. I have one too! I was just wondering how/what you guys have been feeding yours (if anything)? I here some people get away with not direct feeding anything, while others feed 1x to 3x a week. I use the 2L top of coke bottle method to feed mine.

Also, it appears that mine does not like light that much. I transferred it to a 55g w/ new Tek T5 lighting. I started to get a little whiter, so I raised the lights some.

Postive ID would be nice too, thanks!

Cool. Just found this thread. Here is mine.

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/50228maze-brain-101204.jpg

One side has receded a little, while the other side looks good, so I've been moving it around to try to match the conditions on the good side. So far so good. Mine seems to like MH (250DE). The shaded side was the receding side.
