OK w/ the Blasto pics thread out there and the Acan thread becoming a forum within itself... i've been waiting for the LPS forum to open to start this one. i've recently gotten addicted to these lesser known plating/encrusting LPS. i wanna see what's out there.

by "challice" corals i mean the collective group including not only Echinopora (the original challice) but Echinophyllia, Oxypora, and Mycedium as well. if you have anything that looks like one of these... go ahead and post that too. for example Acanthastera rotundoflora would fit in this thead better than the Acan theread...

OK so i'll start things off...

here's a lil variety.

JEEZE! I was gonna post a pic or two, but so far everyone else has posted pics of the same specimens (Randy, Gary, Steve and I have all insestuously been sharing Echino's up here... ;) )

But I can still take credit for bringing THIS one back from Michigan (thanks Ken). ;)

http://reef.myip.org/230/2004_07_25/640x480purple_echino.JPG

And some day I'll have a few frags of this one to share:

http://reef.myip.org/230/2004_07_25/640x480Red_noflash.JPG

Sean, you can just leave them on the bottom of the tank. They do well under a range of conditions, but get sweeper tentacles, which can kill just about anything (trust me....)

http://reef.myip.org/echno_sweepers/close.gif

(more sweeper pics here:http://reef.myip.org/echno_sweepers/ ).

(Yes Steve, you do need to frag that one soon... ;) )

Hey John,
After thinking about that, I can't decide it's that's lame that someone can look as these and know where they came from, or cool.

Randy,

I was guessing because the 3 color morphs above kinda originated from you at one point. Everyone seems to get 'a set' of them from you...including me :D

Which ones do you have or are inquiring about Sean? Echinopora, Echinophyllia, Oxypora, or Mycedium? They have different requirments. Some like a lot of light, some like shade. Some like more flow than others. But for the most part, these corals can be kept in any condition. Even very low light. They just lose some of their color.

Here's a 2 year old article on Echinophyllia.

I keep the echinoporas I have in lower light. Shaded actually. But I have lot's of light in my tanks. I have the blue echinopora, and in brighter light, it turns cream color, instead of powder blue. I have a purple echinopora that can handle more light, but I keep it in the shade, next to the blue. I have a green eye echinopora that I tried in a brighter area. It's color also turned cream/brown, but the mouths still stayed green. I have since moved it down with the other 2 echinoporas. It has not grown as fast, like the others. All three of those Echinoporas are E. lamellosa, most likely. I have a 4th Echinopora, which I believe is E. mammiformis. I keep this one in a brighter zone, with a little more flow than the lamellosas.
The lemellosas also produce long sweeper tentacles, so be careful what you put downstream to them.

the three enchinophyllia and one enchinopora i have are on the bottom and i only have 420w vho/pc and are doing fine. not a ton of growth out of the pink enchinophyllia but thats to be expected from what i've heard.

wow john, you have some really nice pieces. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif
i really like the pink w/ blue edge, bright red, light blue w/ pink mouths, green w/ pink mouths, & pink/light blue.

randy, your collections still inspires me. yours pieces are so big, and after being frag a ton of times. some day i hope my lil frags from your "chalices" grow into big colonies. with the way i frag, that's not very likely... HAHA. remember i just got a bigger tank, so there's hope yet. i know you have a bunch more... those pics are sooo old. time to bust out the camera and update us. i wonder what they look like under your new lighting. i wanna see how the pieces i sent you are doing too.

steve, your pieces aren't fair. you shouldn't be allowed to keep Echinopora that nice. LOL. it's about time you start sharing... :p i like the orange echino too. great find.

I just got a frag of this from tubs. He calls it "alien eye". It's my first chalice type coral, and I must say, I really like it!

This is his pic, as I can't seem to get a shot that does it justice. My frag is about 1 1/2", placed about 3 inches from the bottom in my tank.

JenDub- DOH! I didn't even see where you had asked about that:) It's doing great so far. It's only been a few weeks, but it seems to be already growing a little. I did have to epoxy it to the rock as it kept falling from it's "perch" at night, but other than that, no issues.

LOL! :p

I had to go into the one of the poor exuses for a pet store yesterday to get some frog food, and in their LR tank, the was what looked like the skeliton to a "challice" on a chunck of rock, but it didn't look alive.

Too bad, it was about 4" in diameter.

I think that piece has great potential. I think it is an echinophyllia. The hot pink one I have was brown when it came in too. I think that could turn into a pink, or red. But I know one thing. I've never seen a brown Echinophyllia that was in captivity for a while. They always turn into something.

That is a Mycedium. It's not usually referred to as a chalice, but is still a member of the Pectiniidae family. This is the same family some of the other "chalices" are found, including Echinophyllia and Oxypora. A true chalice, IMO is an Echinopora, which is a member of the Faviidae Family. To be fair, the word "chalice" is just a fancy word for cup.
Main Entry: chalĀ·ice
Pronunciation: 'cha-l&s
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin calic-, calix; akin to Greek kalyx calyx
Date: 14th century
1 : a drinking cup : GOBLET; especially : the eucharistic cup
2 : the cup-shaped interior of a flower

So Mycedium would be best described as a chalice, since it's the only one that really cups.

brahm
11/12/2004, 05:49 AM
..there are sooo many diffrent types of echinoporas though.. i can't tell between those, some oxypora, and some mycediums

ReeferMac
11/12/2004, 06:05 AM
Is that the source of the "Chalice" name, the cup-like shape they grow to? I guess I'd have to agree, as Echinophyllia tends to plate out, rather than grow upwards in whorls or cups.
Hehe, I haven't let one of my pieces of Echinopora get big enough to do that before I fragged it back, so I'll have to take your word on it Randy. ;)

i dunno if it is what randy says it may be(Scolymia vitiensis)... my piece is definetly more than a single large polyp as seen at the link randy provided as well.
http://whelk.aims.gov.au/coralsearc...20pages/340.htm

the growth of my piece seems to be more flattened(the thickness of the actual coral tissue is maybe 1/4 inch when expanded).

anyone else have any ideas?

RandyO
11/16/2004, 04:15 AM
They do look similar, but I don't think they are the same. It's hard to tell from just a picture, but Gary's look like the corallite diameter is large. It also looks like Gary's piece is just 3 or 4 corallites. Your piece looks like smaller corallites, less than 15mm, and more polyps. Though the color is astoundingly similar, your's looks more like what people have been calling A.echinata.

Then again, maybe Gary has a serious Macro shot there, and I'm way off. :)

Gary Majchrzak
11/16/2004, 06:00 AM

oh yeah, did you end up getting that red echino from that store? if you wanna half it we can offer him 100 for it...i am new to the area and someone told me of the store so i went to check it out...saw that piece and talked to the owner about it. he is the most clueless man in the world for coral. when i told him i wanted to ask about a piece of coral to see if he would sell it he said," oh the toadstool...yeah, that's not for sale."....... i was kinda dumbfounded that anyone would want to buy that thing...but to each his own, ya know? anyway, i saw your post here not too long after and yeah.... so let me know if you wanna go half and half or something. =)

Their size are kinda small for vitiensis...If it is an acan then my best guess would be acan ishigakiensis. Pic number 4 or 8, page 31, volumne 3 in the Veron set. Pic number 8 is a much closer resemblence.

Please understand that this is my best guess from your pic and the pic in the Veron set.

Are you feeding the Echino's and Oxy's Marlooney? They all look fantastic. What type of lighting is over the 10 gallon tank? Since I switched to Hamilton 14K 250 DE bulds all of my LPS have started to bleach out. I hope they rebound soon.

Jus Reefin, thanks for the compliment... LOL.

paige, thanks, they're all fed and kept under a 96W PowerQuad 50/50. it'd be a shame for your LPS for bleach. from what i've seen all of your pieces look exceptional. i hope you find out what's wrong. maybe they're just adjusting to the change. good luck.

Naka, nice pieces. time for some joe's juice though.

& oh yeah... sick pics Mustang. i really like the oxy w/ red mouths.

The second piece is sold to me as a Echinophyllia.....It is not a Monti for sure.....I gone through enough of those to know :( .....

Howdy from Oklahoma......you know.... the place that has no coral of color or taste... :( Ok..OK in all seriousness it is REALLY difficult to find any decentcoral period and much less any nice chalice,. I've bought a couple from Tubs and Ming but the market out there is really dry. Anyone here showing pics willing to frag/sell? Or any advice on internet sources for nice chalice?
I'd DEFINITELY appreciate any input...and I'm sorry if this post is "out of place" for this forum.
Thx!

Thanks John, in the pic it looks more blue but it is actually green when I bought it. I think the color is adjusting during acclimation. It was only in my tank for 1 hour before I snapped that pic, either color, I still like.

Shaun Monahan,

I hope you didn't pay $xxx for that piece my friend...I am pretty sure that is the same piece I was looking at.

He agreed to sell it to me for less than xxx but I passed because I didn't want to set the price for those vendor.

It sure is a very nice piece though. Very unique color combination for an echino.
