if anyone needs southdown sand, we can probably arrange to have some bags of it at the meeting this weekend. i think it's 10-11 bucks a bag. it's the exact same thing as the 'sugar-sized' sand carib-sea sells, just *alot* cheaper.

Are you getting it from Jeremy. If so, it is Yardright, which is the same stuff, but in 40 lb bags.

if you have any open bags matt I could use a little. I might just go ahead and get a full bag though

Didn't realize the Yardright label, even though its the same stuff, packs the bags in smaller quantity. Doesn't really make much sense.

Whats the ri nsing procedure with this stuff? Is it pretty clean or do we need to rinse it for a while?

the last bag i used (in my cube) was pretty clean. i pulled a few marble chips out and one or two twigs. the DSB people say you shouldn't rinse it because you lose the super-fine particles that gives the DSB more surface area. i don't think it really matters either way. i don't bother rinsing, because it always seems like you could rinse it forever and it'll still be cloudy. i just empty the tank, put in the sand, and gently add water. it'll be cloudy for a while, but it'll clear up soon enough. especially with some circulation and skimming.

I agree with Matt .. every time I rinse sand (Southdown or Carib Sea oolitic), it takes 10-12 rinsings to ended up with a partially cloudy water.
