View Full Version : venturi
Has anyone used the rio conversion to make a venturi out of the standard pump? I saw plans on about.com.
OR
2) Where can I purchase a venturi valve for a rio or mag drive pump for a DIY venturi skimmer?
Thanks

"Kent" makes a turbo venturi nozzel with threads on each end and a nipple for an air hose. You can pick one up at either Pet Warehouse (http://www.petwhse.com) or That Fish Place (http://www.thatfishplace.com).

yeah.... the Kent makes better bubbles and is easier to DIY with....
Geo posted a pic of a diy venturi that I used to modify a cpr skimmer. It works great, is cheap, and easy to make. Check it out on this thread http://archive.reefcentral.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=20810&highlight=venturi

I used the Kent venturi for my DIY skimmer, it works quite well. don't skimp on you rpump though.
Thanks for all the info. Geos' idea looks very interesting. I found clear blue PVC (4 inch) today at a local plastics place. Expensive as heck but should give a great view of the bubble jet and sch 40 fittings work great. Again thanks for all the suggestions.

BTW What would that big a reduction in tube diameter (3/8 in the washer) do to the pump pressure? I am planning on using a mag 7 or 9.5.
Rad,
I've used that venturi with a mag 950 and rio 2100, tried a sen 900 but it was too powerful. Instead of the disc, you can also get a threaded hose barb, cut off the base, sand the corners round, and use that in the venturi.

I think the flat hose barb works a tad better than the disc, but the disc does work. You can actually drill a hole in a piece of 1/8" acrylic and glue the 1/2" pvc pipe to the sheet over the hole. then cut the sheet flush with the pipe with a router and flush trim bit and insert it into the female thread fitting. The whole thing cost about a buck.
