I have a friend that wants to start up his saltwater tank again also, but he doesn't have a skimmer. It would probbly have to be a hang-on model as he's not really wanting a sump right now.

What can you recomend. His tank will basicly be a FOWLR. Please suggest hang-on and sump models just in case he does go with a sump.

Thanks!!!

Im no expert but I have a Prizm..its quiet, is a hang on and pulls a lot of gunk out. I paid $69 for it on sale, it's on my 55 FOWLER.

I may get some gruff for this but a Skilter should work as well. They hang on the back and act as a skimmer and filter. The thing that makes them work is to also use a wooden airstone and put it inside the skilter through the top of the collection cup so that you get more air bubbles. The skilter alone doesn't do anything but with the airstone and the right amount of air and bubbles they seem to work well. I have used them like this in the past. Just be sure not to overload the 29 gallon tank with fish or food.

I'm real happy with the Bakpak2 on our 26 reef. Consistently pulls gunk from the water. No problems.

I second newbie1's suggestion for the Remora. I've also got a Remora with the 1200 maxi-jet on my 40 gallon and it seems to be working well. If I didn't go with the Remora (in order to $ave) I probably would have bought a Prizm.

If your friend want's a really good hang-on skimmer and can spare $175, then I would recommend the precision marine HOT-1. I believe it is the best hang-on skimmer for the money that I have ever used.

Randy,

What do you think of a HOT-1 on a 70? I still have the Remora Pro and am tired of messing with it, but would like to hear from lots of people before buying a new skimmer.

Thanks.

Hey Bigtank,

What problems have you had with the Remora Pro? I haven't had any problems yet but was wondering so I'll know what to look out for in the future. Thanks!

Bigtank, I honestly don't know how large a tank a PM HOT-1 could handle. All my tanks are very small but I like to keep them very well skimmed. I assume you're without a sump on that 70 right?

ReefMole,

It puts out lots of very watery skimmate, flimsy, rather small collection cup, cheesy injector maintenance screw, loud operation, etc.

Randy,

I do not have a sump.

I just received my PM HOT-1 a few days a go so have yet to see any real results but i can say this. The construction is sturdy and feels really solid, the neck is longer then most skimmers I've seen out there. My only complaints are that it comes with a RIO 800 (and we all know what a RIO can do to your tank) and the instructions are a little vague, but otherwise it's well worth the money! (164.95 at Ocean Encounter)

I have two BakPak's. One on a 75 and one on a 30. Does and excellent job on both. The 2 things I like best are, they are so easy to adjust to get the right density foam, and I only have to take them down for cleaning once every month or two.(Hang on)

The skilter alone doesn't do anything

You are kidding right?

Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY FROM SKILTERS: THEY SUCK!You are right about the skilter alone, though! They don't do anything.

On that size tank a Prism will do OK but you can also find a used Bak-Pak for the same price and with the MJ-1200 conversion its a dream. I have it on my 29 Gal. My Prism is on my 7 Gal Bowfront tank now.
