View Full Version : Simple Sump question

Hi:

When I set up my first sump, I followed a simple strategy suggested by experienced reefers: The sump was divided into 2 sections. The overflow water comes into the 1st section where the protein skimmer is hosted. Then the water "falls over" to the next section where the main pump is hosted.

My question is: Why do I need to divide the sump? Why don't I just put skimmer & pump all together in the sump?

Thank you very much for answering this dumb question.

Hi TXReefer,

One of the reasons that many divide their sumps is to trap some of the bubbles from the skimmer or overflow from going back into the tank.

You do not have to divide the sump but if your skimmer puts out a lot of bubbles they will travel right back into the tank.

Others divide the sump to create an area for a refugium or a compartment to place carbon or other media.
